Thinking about painting the car next year

In flat black but before that I have a few areas of rust to deal with.. the gas door cover (easy) the center line of the roof right above the front windshield and some bubbling on the rear fender on passenger side.

I expect it to be pretty straight forward to remove? I think I will be devoting about 2-3 weeks on this.. I will be painting it in N.C. the paint I will most likely be using is dupont Nason paint.

Any tips on this and where I can get the paint from and what can I expect to pay?

You'll need more than just paint. An adhesion promoter, certain primer and sealer, and clear too. Dont forget a very good brush on sealer for the parts you cut out and riviet or weld back in place.


As far as paint goes (assuming you're using an HVLP gun) I know of Allied Auto Parts. couple locations in R.I. that are licensed distributors for Dupont.

the gas cap is easy, just get a new gas cap from a junkyard if you're painting the car anyway... on the windshield, good luck I've heard its a pain in the ass. Are you going to pull the windshield out to do it?

You'll probably want to because the rust is probably coming from around the windshield.

Yes and No.

Yes= if the old urethane is stubborn. Having someone inside to apply pressure on the inside while you cut around it, makes it easier.... but not recommended. Also,if you're gonna use the "piano wire" method, someone inside to counter pull makes it easier.... but not recommended. An air cutter could replace said body.


Best way to do over the windshield areas is to remove the windshield. If you dont, you might end up with a nice looking car that leaks water from those areas. Also, removing the windshield could also expose weak areas in the structure.


Make sure if you do remove it and do the bodywork, you use drip check and seal the heck out of it. If you were alot more local, I'd walk you through it.

Hey just a thought maybe call a mobile glass company and see if they will just come out and pull it and put it back in when the paint work is done. when i worked at a body shop for a few years we used to have the glass guys come out all the time and remove the glass and then just store it in the bay until after paint was all done. this way you are having a professional do it. and they can let you know if you need any new seals etc. and if there is a leak you have some one to call to warenty the work.
the time and energy you save by having them do it. might worth the frustration and the finished product.

I pulled as much of the strip back and it was not that bad I have to get a shot next time.
