look familiar? i posted in the craigslist sale section a while ago, when they wanted waaayyy to much for it...something changed, and they saw the light and advertized it for a good price, so i jumped on it.

PO says hes sure the HGs are toast...sure enough theres water in the oil.

went to check the codes, only one that came back is P1507 idle control malfunction.

drives ok, the little bit i have driven it.

any of you fellas in the north want to come vacation in fl and head back with a 100% rust free, complete, unmolested 99GT for a good price?

or im gonna pull it apart and fix the HGs OR find a new motor and sell it locally

drove it around a bit the day i brought it home, parked it in the back yard cause i needed to clean out the garage, go to spin it around and pull it in, and crank, no start. every once in a while a faint glimmer of hope, it catches, but wont do the deed.

plenty of fuel at the filter, im kind of looking at the coil at this point, havent gotten into it to figure it out....

do i figure it out now, then pull it all apart? or wait until reassembly to figure it out? hmmmm...

well, drained the chocolate milk out of the oil pan, removed everything else but the TQ converter bolts and matiing surface bolts....

...AND one of the exhaust manifold nuts is, in a word "round", any genius suggestions on how to remove it?

got the exhaust off, now im trying to remember how i had removed the two bottom most mounting nuts, i usually do transmissions so the CV axles are out of the way, but i would rather not remove them.

Passenger side you can get by reaching down + a deep socket, driver site takes a u-joint, extension and a shorty socket. or a wrench if you're a contortionist. ;)

ok, got everything off the motor, now im sitting here staring at these cam gears, whats the correct way to remove them?

i assume i have to remove them first before that black timing cover behind them is able to come off?

maybe im just being paranoid, but i feel like ima break somethin..it hasnt happened yet, and were getting closer to the expensive bits.

EDIT: removal procedure lists some special tools that i dont have, what have you guys done in your garages?

i know those cam gears arent the strongest thing in the world, so im a little hesitant to try to hold them and break that nut loose..

oh..theres a wrench spot on the cam...DUH

FSM lists, tighten to 29NM,
retighten to 69nm,
back all off 180deg,
bacl all off another 180 degrees,
tighten center bolts to 34nm,
tighten outer bolts to 15nm
tighten all 90deg
tighten all 90 deg again


whats with the complication here?

To be certain the head seats evenly especially going over those guide slots. Sealing and mating them evenly. Just went through this on a 2.2. Not hard, but an extra step that's all.

kinda figured.. just seems like it had you get it pretty tight, then back it off waaaay loose.. oh well, i followed instructions...

the issue im having now is this.

im trying to figure out how to place the cam shafts for re-install, so that i wont have to rotate them, etc after the caps are on...

anyone have any thoughts on that? like where to put the keyway so it will be close to setting into time?

also, my FSM doesnt have a listing for cam journal cap tightening torque. help?

welll............SHIT FUCK DAMN

decided to go torque down the cam caps to 10NM as specified...then i heard it...that odd creak/snap sound...

yup, one of the front most cam cap bolts has broken off about 1/4 inch below the valve cover gasket surface.

no idea how to begin to get it out....

these cap bolts are just about to small to use an easy out thing...

thoughts? ideas?

If you do go this route (which is probably the way I would go) make sure you have a Heli Coil kit handy. You can always get one from AutoZone/CarQuest etc... Makes re-tapping the hole easier and cleaner.

actually went to walmart as it was late and nothing was open...

bought a cheapo extractor kit, drilled out the bolt and used the extractor and it came right out..first time ive ever had an extractor work well.

now ordering the cam cap bolts i need, NO local dealers have them...and there orders go in monday and get here thursday...s i ordered them off subaruparts.com....god i hate waiting for parts....

finally got my tracking number for the cam bolts i ordered on the sept 9th, theyre still in Oregon, estimated delivery sept 21st...holy slow.

they must have taped them to the back of a tortoise or something.

finally got my bolts, resuming work on it tonight, one question i have before i move forward, the front cam cap, whould i be putting sealant/gasket maker between it and the mating surface for it on the head?

FSM doesnt say anything about it, but i gotta wonder.

Yes, but just a little tiny bit around the cam seal area I believe.

Where did you order the bolts from? Rallitek? I'm having a brain fart on who is in Troutdale.

Nevermind, just reread. They were shipped from subaruparts.com (actually Bruce Titus Tacoma Subaru) down to Troutdale. :)

BTW the point of all the steps for the head bolts is to make sure the heads get seated properly, then loosen them up and retighten to set the proper tension on the bolts. And the tightening to a set torque spec then turning them an additional amount helps reduce variation from the friction of the threads changing the actual tension.

got it all put back together....the good new is it runs, rather well i might add.

the bad...welll...shit fuck damn...

i dont know what i fucked up but from the top rear of the passenger side HG is literally PUMPING oil, its all over the windshield. the motor, the garage wall, ceiling AND floor...what an expensive way to make a mess of the garage.

what did i mess up? only thing i can think of is i missed torquing one HG bolt down..but im damn sure i didnt... had the heads checked for straightness, and they were fine, and it damn sure didnt do this before...

well, out she comes..again. if it turns out it was my dumbassness and forgot a bolt, would i need another HG?

thoughts? ideas? ridicule?

cant believe it, what a pain..now its gonna be at least a week before i have time to pull it again....

Man.. sounds like how i broke off a strut bolt. Stupid torque wrench couldnt really handle such a small number and it snapped it off. Just getting to reading this thread now.

Hopefully you can figure out what happens. I'm interested to hear. What a pain in the ass and a hard way to learn something. You should definitely try and document it a bit more if you get a chance.. really cool to read peoples engine rebuild reports!

a video of just putting the timing belt on, as in when i remove it, how to set the pulleys and put it back on? that sounds fun. i would be happy too, ill start videotaping the removal, etc and then maybe you and i can figure out how to edit it together, etc, i imagine i can just throw it on the tube, but editing it is the hard part, never done it before.

im so mad, i dont know weather to laugh or cry or stab something.... but definitely beer oclock.

anyone tell me if im correct in assuming, even if one of the head bolts didnt get to final angle torque, ill need a new gasket? or could i get away with just taking the cams out and getting the one bolt torqued down..

see the hole, in the upper left hand on the mating surface? looks like its coming from right there... also looks like the gasket(that you can see while looking down at the head mated to the block) right where the hole is dips to far down..maybe i got the wrong gasket? put it on upside down? etc? fml at this point.

Check it hasn't been damaged by the pistons or valves. If it's ok, then you should be ok to reuse it.

still need exhaust work, and motor has a slight tick, lesson learned, when in doubt,go with another motor.

and i must have a brake leak somewhere, squishy pedal and i cant vacuum bleed one of the rear calipers.
