I did a little searching on here and I couldn't really find what I was looking for and Google wasn't helping out either so....

I have a 2003 Legacy L AET, do I have the clutchless shifting option? More specifically, am I hurting my tranny by shifting it down to 3, 2, 1 while driving? And what EXACTLY is the clutchless shifting and what EXACTLY does it do for my car, specifically.

Thanks in advance guys, I'm a noob to this stuff haha

are you guys talking about auto trannies?
if you are its doesnt hurt it unless you are going to fast.

on my 5mt i clutchless up and down shift. its all about rev matching the gears. it doesnt hurt it if you do it right. it also saves your clutch.

Yeah it's an automatic. The car manual says that you shouldn't exceed 60mph in 3rd. I'm sure that these gears apply engine braking, but I was just making sure you can shift through them while driving without hurting the engine. I know you can get more torque in the lower gears. I'm just checking. I like to drive and shift with it and I was just making sure this wasn't hurting my engine or tranny

edit: to Jewbaru, if it's an auto then it's a 4AET, there's "Drive" plus the three other gears, hence the 4.

I think it just puts more wear and tear on the tranny and motor. I do it too since I hate autos and going to swap a 5 speed soon.

BTW the clutchless shifting you are refering to is a JDM tranny that used paddle shifters on the wheel. It is not an auto but both.

Clutchless shifting on a synchromesh transmission is not a good idea, because it will always cause excessive wear on the synchros, no matter how good (you think) you are. Most of the transmissions designed for clutchless shifting (i.e. big rigs, high performance transmissions) don't have synchros, so its actually harder to shift them if you clutch in.

Auto's don't have clutches, therefore every shift is a clutchless shift.

You guy's have slush boxes instead... Oh, sorry, um "Torque Converter"

I know auto's don't have clutches, that's why I got it confused with "clutchless" shifting.

I just didn't know if when I was driving, if going down into 3 without being stopped was doing anything damaging to my tranny or engine

you are fine, just dont slam it into 1st while doing 50

And you can still revmatch, though it's much harder than in a manual. There's an art to driving an auto PROPERLY, it can be much harder to master than a manual. When i drive auto's, on the very rare ocasion, i always downshift.

mine's auto trans also, I sometimes down shift when slowing down hard only to 2nd gear. If lower then 10 mph, drop it to 1st.

as a note with my obs if i drop down to 1st when i am going faster than i should be the transmission doesnt shift till i am going slow enough

Downshifting for engine braking never made sense to me - I'd rather use my $60 brake pads as opposed to my $2000 drivetrain to slow the car down...

drive an auto like an auto and drive a manual like a manual. Not the other way around.

You're not gaining anything by "shifting" a slush box, most of them have overrides to keep you from doing something like trying to get it to go into 1st on a highway.

I have more mean things to say about this practice but whatever...
