I would like to install a K&N or another form of a high flow filter on my 01 outback 2.5 But I can't seem to get the freaking airbox open. I have undone the clips on the side as well as the one on the top, which allows a little access to the air box but it does not open. I guess I'm stupid but what am i missing??

it might just be stuck together. might have you pry it apart. it is connected at the bottom by a hinge.

Did you take out the short little bolt on the left (driver) side? At least on my '00 outback I have to remove this to get the back of the airbox off. That style is really picky about getting put back on right too, since you have to make sure the little clips at the bottom seat correctly on reinstallation.

No I didn't. Some stuff came up so I never got around to changing it. But when I do, I'll be sure to get that screw and make sure It goes back on right how it came off! Thanks!!!

Hi there! My brother just recently got his car and wanting to do some routine maintenance on it. He wanted to change the air filter and seeing that K&N is quite popular so we're both curious if it's really that good. Did you try the K&N on your car or do you have other brands you could suggest? What can you say about the K&N it's performance? I'll appreciate any suggestions or opinions. Thanks in advance!

Stick with the stock one(Fram, OEM, STP,...) and just change it every other oil change. Its a mod that really isn't worth the money mainly cause you hear people that dont know how to service them(over oil them) and then screw up sensors and your motor!
