Well, unfortunately I have decided to put the Impreza into early winter hibernation so I decided I would spend some time on the Legacy. Lowered it a little bit, put the autoX wheels on from the wagon and threw my snow/longboard rack on it and then decided mid-cruise that I should snap some photos of it.

Now: (car was too low with the front lip, cracked/ripped it off the first day I lowered it..probably just do a rubber Home Depot lip eventually)

I've actually never raced in Fargo. I mainly do the Minot, Bismarck and Williston events.

I don't race the Legacy though...My autoX car is a 99 Impreza OBS that I repainted, JDM front end, Stripp'd it out and turbo'd it...Its a fun little grocery getter!

So let's talk about those door panels. They look pretty sweet.

What did you do? Totally disassemble the panel? Like drill out plastic rivets and stuff and remove the factory covering? Or just cover up what was there and glue it down around the edges so it wouldn't pop out?

I didn't have to drill out the rivets but I did remove the OEM fabric. I then used them as a template for cutting out the plaid fabric. After they were all cut out I spray a fabric adhesive on the door cards and laid the plaid down and tucked the edges.

They are the OEM 2002 Legacy headlights, I just modded them. I put them in the oven to heat up the glue and then I removed the front clear plastic from the housing. I then popped out the orange reflector using a small flat-head screwdriver. After, I sanded down the chrome on the shroud and sprayed it flat black. Threw them back in the oven to reheat the glue and reassembled them and wahlah!

Here is a writeup on my GC Impreza forum, the baking directions are the same. I have done my Impreza headlights twice, Legacy, Civic, and xB ones. Baking steps are all the same.

what kind of silicon can you use when reassembing them. i know there should therorically be enough but i dont want my lights to fog up. is there a certain kind that works well and would b able to be heated up again in case i ever need to remove the lenses again?

I always love looking at your thread.

looking good!

And do you have any good shots of your muffler, I've been looking into oval tip. Where did you get it? How far does it hang down? Some bright, unedited pictures would be greatly appreciated! :smt023

Question about the lip (the acura one): How did you fasten it? Dilling holes or what? From the pic of the one the guy found on ebay it didn't look like there were a lot of flat spots to connect it. Could you give me some sort of write up on how to put it on? I'm gonna get mine next week.

Sorry for all of the questions but your help would be greatly appreciated!

ALL NATURAL

I purchased the muffler from http://www.turbometal.com. When my buddy installed it we bent the piping and placed the hangars so it would basically hug the bottom of the bumper.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2010/09/5039224570_ee1d6ceec4_b-1.jpg

What I basically did is put a bunch of screws, probably an inch apart, all the way across that middle flat section. On the sides where there was still a little lip I manage to get a couple screws drilled into that. The very ends where the lip meets with the wheel well I drilled a small hole in the end of the lip towards the top (part of the lip that sits against the wheel well). Then I drilled a small hole into the bumper (end of bumper parallel to the ground) and then used a black ziptie through the two holes to hold it on and trimmed up the tie so it was unnoticeable. Instead of using a ziptie you could just run a screw at an angle through the lip/bumper I am sure. I carried zipties with me because if I bottomed out they would tend to break.

The spats are actually made for the rear bumper of 93-01 Imprezas.
The kit had already been discontinued for quite some time by the time I got it. I got the last one on ebay so I don't know if you'll have any luck finding them. If you do want to search around though it is the Orciari CW kit.
Thanks, I try to give my cars my own personal touches!

I found a set on ebay. Seller is in great britain. I will try some local shops see waht they have. How is the installation?

ALL NATURAL
10-08-2010, 11:17 AM
Nice, good deal.

Installation is simple. I put them on while the car was on a lift getting exhaust work done so it went even smoother. Basically, I just drilled ~3 screws into the bottom of it and then one on the inside edge of the bumper (edge facing the wheel).

When you first get them they don't look like the right shape but it flexes very easy and once installed it looks like they were made for the Legacy front bump.

I had a buddy help me when I installed mine. I had him hold it tightly against the bumper as I put the screws through it to make sure there would be no gaps.

Yet...another photo.

There is about 15 different steps I use to get that effect...
contrast, saturation, RGB individual levels, vignette, tone, levels...and more

MOMO steering wheel took me about 5min to install...and that included removing the other one also.

I can try and do a writeup on it if you want.

Might change up the interior a little..start the transformation to a mild VIP styling. I will reupholster the door cards, possibly the headliner and also convert the interior completely to black.

Also, I want to get a Baja Turbo hood for asthetics. My Impreza has a GIANT hood scoop on it and a little scoop also...my Legacy seems lacking and it'll make it look a little more aggressive..I don't know when I will get around to buying this yet though.

Interior is looking good. I really need to do something with my door panels. Sunroof leaking made me take out the headliner so I'm definitely doing that.

Light bar doesn't go with VIP style in any way.

Please don't do black wheels. Something else would look way better. All black just screams kid who thinks he's expressing his rage through the color choice of his car parts. Which is not classy or VIP style or awesome in anyway. Even like a darker grey would be ok, but just not black.

Light bar will just be for winter, which started yesterday, if it does go on.

Black is one of the most classy colors out there, especially since my exterior already has flat black accents. I would like to keep the color scheme down to two colors on the exterior. I don't care for chrome personally. The XXRs are what I have in mind but I am not set on them, who knows what I'll come across by then, but I love black.
I don't know how you can't consider black classy, when doing VIP you are suppose to use white, black, or a very dark color since they are the sleekest, most classy.
This doesn't look like EMO rage to me..

I never said black wasn't classy. I said all black isn't. And I just can't get behind black wheels. I mean some cars can pull it off, but never 100% black. The car above at least has a good dish on it, the wheels would still look better a slightly lighter color or polished, but it's not as horrible. And with the subaru, you aren't going to have much of a lip, so even with a chrome lip it still wont' look good.

And flat black accents? That's a good thing?

I am modding this one and eventually I will pic up a SUV or something of the sort for my main work vehicle. I just like the looks of VIP interior, clean and classy.

Like I said before, I am doing the interior and the exterior will come later. I have a lot of things and big expenses coming up next year for my photography so I have I'm guessing a year or more to settle things out.

This spring I will be taking those white wheels I had on here before and possibly powder-coating those a different color and throwing all-season tires on them to hold me over.

I've thought about selling them but...they are just too unique to let go of haha
I wouldn't be surprised if they end back up on my car someday.

Thanks man, I might not necessarily go full blown ViP but I do want the car low and some 17s or 18s. We'll see, I have a lot of ideas that flow through my head so who knows what'll come up next. I do love VIP though.
I am struggling between the Legacy and the Impreza...I have BIG plans for both but I just don't know which one to do first :/

Glad you like, I'm a fan of it too...just wish I had a different set of wheels for winter! Someday..lol

Don't even worry about the winter rims. There's a whole bunch of stuff I'd like to do to my car but I have zero spare cash to do it.

As far as I'm concerned, your winter mode would still be money if you stopped now. I especially like the yellow lights contrasting off the blue paint job.

You might want to do some research on VIP first. It's not as simple as you think as I have learnt because even I have chosen to go down the VIP styled path.

Finding appropriate wheels is the hardest part. Nothing VIP comes in 5x100 except Works... I got sick of searching for VIP rims and am just settling with BBS LM copies.

I have researched it. I don't know if I am going to go full blown VIP yet, I have been describing my future setup as Mild VIP usually.

Really, all I mean by VIP is I want to go low; decent size wheels; and woodgrain interior.
I can't completely copy a style/trend because I like my car to stand out. It'll have attributes of a VIP car but it'll still be my own.
The interior is probably going to be pretty full blown VIP, exterior will be clean.
I'll probably end up getting these wheels with blue rivets.

I think when spring rolls around I am going wrap those white wheels I have in some all-seasons and use those for all-season wheels for now. I won't be getting new wheels for it for awhile so those can hold me over, since I too have zero spare cash.

Thanks though, all my Subarus have some yellow lights on them..even my Brat! Love it for some reason.

So pretty much just the clean flush look? VIP also involves a bit of camber so you should think about that or it'll look like a stanced BE with really nice interior haha.

I'm all for that and I think it should look sweet.

I've actually been tried to get a hold of XXR 521s for about two months now through an ebay seller but they still haven't gotten the silver and polished lip set yet. What size are you thinking of getting? I'm waiting on 18x8.5 +30 in that colour to finally come in. The seller's name is LSD_MOTORSPORTS_1 if I remember correctly...

Correct, I say "Mild VIP" because the outside will be low and flush but the inside will be styled after VIP cars..I like the luxury since my Impreza is completely stripped out.
The majority of VIP rides all have air-suspension and I am not that dedicated. Low with coilovers and either 17x8-8.5 or 18x8-8.5 [not completely sure yet]. +40 offset is basically flush with the fenders but if I am running 8-8.5in wheels I'll have to run a +30 offset or less otherwise the wheel will hit the strut. I'll end up having to roll the fenders also then I am sure, unsure about pulling them though...I'll have to see after a test fit.
If my business gets up and going I probably won't be doing this for awhile just because I probably shouldn't be transporting clients on coilovers, not the best ride..I'd need to invest in a business vehicle first.

Matty2Hotty
12-06-2010, 12:22 AM
Ummm I would have to disagree with 8 or 8.5 with a +40, it shouldnt rub at all. Got people running 18x9 +35 with no problem. The different should equal out the difference with 5mm offset and .5" rim width.

ALL NATURAL
12-06-2010, 12:53 AM
Wow, thats pretty crazy. Thanks for the info. I was just basing my guess on the number I have for my Impreza since a lot of the parts are interchangeable. I'll obviously be looking more into the number before I buy a set of wheels but at least now I have an idea of what I can run...18x9s sound pretty awesome.

BTW, your car looks great judging by your avatar. What suspension are you running?

Matty2Hotty
12-06-2010, 02:16 AM
Thanks, some TEIN coilovers. Yeah a 18x9 +35 is as good as it gets so far for the 00-04s to be perfectly flush with a little fender roll. Seen someone try a 18x9.5 +35 on a wagon and poked a good inch or so(ugly). I'm personally going to be running 19x8.5 with a +40, might add a 5mm spacer but not sure yet. Find out once I order wheels up in spring time.

ALL NATURAL

That sounds awesome! Yeah, I don't know how the aggressive fitment would look on the Legacy [1in poke]. I might get some for my Impreza that stick out but thats a whole different theme and it'll have fender flares.

19x8.5 is massive! Looking forward to seeing photos of it. I don't know if I can go over 18s..for the longest time I didn't like anything over 16s before I got the Legacy.

19s are way oversized for a BE. I would personally not go any higher than 18s. 17x8.5 are pretty hard to come by these days.

Poke can easily be fixed by adding camber or running a stretched set up.

By the way, VIP cars don't have to have air bags. Traditional VIP cars came factory with air bag suspension and people just modify them.

I agree, I would never go something that big but I still want to see what they look like when he has them on.

Correct, I will be driving this a lot so I do not want ridiculous camber since I don't want uneven tire wear and I'm not the biggest fan of stretched tires but I will do it if necessary [just not over the top stretch]. Thats why I am going to probably go more sleek and flush on the outside and VIP interior [mild vip all around].

I know this, but if someone was going to go full VIP it would be easier with airbag setups so you can slam it or raise it when necessary. You wouldn't have to scrape over every entrance.

Unfortunately...the Legacy might be going up for sale. Going to test drive a Jetta TDi on Sunday, if I like it I'll be putting the Legacy up for sale on Monday. It gets around 45mpg and has gobs of torque, plus its a 5spd and I'm getting sick of the auto in the Legacy.

I'll still be in the Suby game though..if I pick up the TDi I'll be able to focus more on getting my wagon done.

I will say that you will HATE working on the Jetta. They are a PITA.

Yea, I know that :/ Its my buddy's car though and he has done all the maitenance on it and is putting new glow plugs in it as I type this. I don't plan on really modding it at all, it already has exhaust and injectors, I just want a DD that gets decent mpg. I'm still up in the air about it.

What year is it? TDis are reliable as all hell. Pita to work on, but it's rare that you'll have any major issues. I say get it...and then give me your license plate.

Its a '98 [MK3]. I've been test driving it all day and I actually love it so hopefully everything works out. I have a lot of interest in the Legacy so hopefully someone comes through. haha, I could probably do that.

At least you aren't leaving the Subaru community all together. Hopefully the new car works out well for you.

I know the car is sold but I'd like to know all the info when it came to paining the interior. Did you leave the dash in when painting it? And how good is this paint. Also how many cans did it take to do this and also how many coats did you do? I want leather interior to be black but I may go this route instead but I want to have info about everything because like you I'm going with a slight VIP but for sure luxury look to my BD and want black interior.
