It seems like anymore it's 1 step forward, 10 steps back with my car. I fix and/or mod things and then twice as many issues/problems pop up afterwards. Arrrrggh!

Today was a cold morning and I went to warm up my car before taking my daughter to school. I started the car and went to go back inside when I noticed steam coming from under the car. Looked under and I blew another 3" exhaust gasket on my test-pipe! Yay! That's like the 4th one. :roll:

I also replaced my front fenders this past summer and was finally completely rust free....not anymore :x . I'm getting a hole just behind the passengerside rear door, at the bottom. Great, I can't just replace that. I also had spilt a gas additive on my paint job around the gas door area a few years back and it totally screwed up my clear coat in that area. Well now the paint is splitting under there and I'm getting little spots of surface rust. Double ARGGGHH!

I need a few grand and about a month to work on the old girl and get her back in form, neither of which are going to happen anytime soon. :(

Matt, I'm really sorry. The Midwest & Northeast areas have always been really hard on cars :(

My car is also experiencing a ton of rust problems (around the rear fenders, and my passenger rear door at the bottom is being eaten from the inside) :(

i hear ya on the one step forward 10 back though. i have some rust starting at the back of my pass rear door too :? that and i think i have another bad axle. i'm not sure. i'm hoping it's not the rear diff going and my tranny still hates to shift and the torque convertor still won't lock up immediately

i hear ya dude.

but it's almost inevitable with an older car. that's why i've decided that i'm just gonna keep up with regular maintenance, and then buy something else by this time next year. i know we cannot afford anything new, but we should be able to swing a used WRX that's 2 or 3 years old.

Yeah, salt sucks. Being from Oregon originaly I'm not used to cars rusting out like they do out east here. Where are all the old air cooled VW's?! :(

I still love the old girl but I have to admit that I have been giving longing looks at newer Scoobies. I just hope Subarina doesn't notice or she's liable to leave me stranded out in the middle of nowhere sometime.

wow, all this talk of rust has sorta made me mad at my dad...he never cared about the body of the car...so now its going to hell. Although I doubt rust will be a real problem anytime soon.

Except for maybe that damn door! That one really ticks me off. The door seals on my car suck!

Have you guys looked into electronic rust prevention?

I looked into this before, to stop rust from spreading on an old Camry I bought on e-bay from the east coast.

yeah, all early Legs I've seen had rusting issues on rear quarter panels, specially behind the wheelwells. It's just a weakness, design or ingeneering flaw. Mine had problems, too, so I'm working on it in the shop actually. I can post some pics later. We've cut all rotten panels and I can tell you guys, they f*cked it up from factory. But who could know we're going to drive those great cars for 10+ years ?! :lol:

The older a car gets, the less effective it's corrosion protection. The only way to deal with it is to get new panels, or heat and blast the metal bare and then seal it properly with new metal, treat it and repaint.

On a 92 car you're looking at a car that is 10+ years past it's corrosion protection warranty, AND it's based in the north. That's pretty good.

I've wondered about this. It seems, me, a car lover, always gets screwed. I do something nice to the car and something breaks or goes wrong. Random stuff always pops up.

I wonder why non car oriented people don't have this happen to them. I've come up with two conclusions. 1) they simply don't notice when stuff breaks for a long time, or 2) they always take it to a garage, spend lots of money there, but have every little thing wrong (and supposedly wrong) replaced and thus there cars stay together better than mine, which is worked on when I find something needing replacing.

I have a CV axle replacement coming this weekend hopefully. I hope I can keep it under $500. I wish I had the tools at college to do it myself.

They do. They ignore it until its a serious problem, then they sell the car, and that's why you see completely rust bucket'd Grand Ams being driven by poor teenagers. Because nobody cared, and the problem spread.

oh, you're kidding me! CV axles are pretty easy. Just get a 35mm socket, a 14mm socket, a drill bit that is the 'right' size, and borrow someones driveway for an hour.

Matt, I can always sand blast the rusted areas for ya and cover it with some Bondo as a very temp fix. Once I get my electric upgraded in my garage, my co-worker can come over and we can weld in new pieces of metal in place of the rusted areas bro!

Right on. I definitely need to do something about the hole by the rear door. The spot by the gas door isn't too bad though.

Yeah, I can relate to that rust issue. I just got Magen repainted and it's starting again. That has had bad luck from the get go. When a car gets hit from behind by a guy having a siezure and then sits in a guy's house whose house burns down you have to wonder. Meh, I just have bad luck. I noticed some spots starting on my newer car the other day too. On both sides behind the front quarter panel.
