okay so for school i am planning on doing a project incorporating my car and one thing on the list is my transmission. it is in good shape. the only issue that is known is the first gear syncro which causes grinding when downshifting so i tend to stay away from first as much as possible. another issue is minor possible damaging (i don't know what it is) but it is a shudder when i am braking hard and downshifting usally from 4th to 3rd. i know many on here have done rebuilds and i was wondering if they/you could help me figure out what i need to do it and how much it would cost. at the moment i believe that first gear should be entirely replaced and a new synchro of course. also i was wondering what else i would need to rebuild it properly and the entire rebuild cost doing work myself with help. another question i have is what tools i will need to remove and work on the transmission. anything else you can think of that may help would be very appreciated. i should have a professional to help on this so i can do it correctly but i am trying to plan this out throughly. if someone can list the process and pictures it would be very appreciated. any help i can get i will use.

ps: my drivetrain gear ratio is 4.11 i believe the same as most wrx drivetrains. please correct me if i'm wrong!

thanks for your time

To remove the transmission you'll at least need a basic socket set and a good floor jack. I've looked at the transmission rebuild in the FSM and there are a lot of components that have to be installed with extreme precision - requiring tools that usually only a transmission shop would have.

I've rebuilt my 5mt but nothing near as estensive as what you'd be getting into you'll need access to a press, huge socket set, and a torque wrench that can do 200ftlbs to replace a gear, on top of that you'll need to check your backlash when everything goes back together

tbh a shop would be the best bet due to how much would be involved with what you say is wrong
