I just bought and installed a brand new full stock exhaust system including the header. I have a 97 legacy outback. What's a cheap way to make my exhaust have a good tone but not too loud?

UEL header will make it louder automatically.

Keep the stock cats or it will get a LOT louder.

Don't go past 2 1/4" exhaust. Its unnecessary and will cause more rasp.

Choose a quality muffer. Borla and Magnaflow are good brands. Flowmaster and the no-name ebay garbage are not.

header shouldn't make the car louder, if everything after it is stock.
My self and several others here on sl-i think vibrant performance mufflers are high up on the quality list

The UEL header makes a lower pitch noise which will cause more interior drone, it'll sound louder.

I've never had any Vibrant parts, but I've heard they are alright.

"good tone" is such a relative phrase...

My car sounded absolutely 100% the same with an UEL and stock everything else. I'd suggest UEL and a Magnaflow. Or even cheaper, UEL's and cut off the factory muffler and run an 18" glasspack. I set my dad's legacy up with a glasspack and it's surprisingly quite.

all i did was buy flex pipe and a muffler hooked it to my cat, threw up some muffler hangers jerry-rigged but sounds really nice. not to loud and a deep rumble

He said cheap. I would say knock the baffling out of the muffler then If you still want boxer rumble not just loudness get UEL headers.

i bought a stroumugg and a flowmaster from the junk yard that changed the note a lot. i like the stroumugg better for looks, but i think the flow master sounded better.
the factory y pipe kinda has a neer 'honda-ricer-boy' pitch/tone. if it was me, i would drop the money and get a UEL header, so it gives that subaru sound.

it was cheap paid a total of $60I was reffering to the people talking about UEL headers and vibrand stuff either one is going to come out to around $150. If you have the stock 2" pipeing and the stock resonator just straitpiping the stock muffer isn't that loud. If you want to spend $120 to get a vibrant muffler they are great.

more than a year old, but did no one mention, not buying a whole new stock setup and then trying to get good/more sound out of it might not have ben the best route,

its like all the thread that say, " i just payed money for this, is it any good?" it to late. should have thought about that before you spent money.

if you want some cheap UELs get the 06+ stock exhaust manifold, oil pan, pickup tube, windage tray.
