Dead speedo in 97 Legacy Wagon

Hey guys, I did a search and didnt see anything that helped me with this. If I missed it, my bad....

A friend of mine has a 97 bg/bk Legacy L Wagon with a 5 speed (2.2). We thought at first it had a bad speedo head (cluster), but after changing 3 of them, we figured that was not the problem. I have not done much tranny work to Subaru's, just motors so I have no idea where the speed sensor is, or what else the problem could be if it's something else...

Speed sensor is on top of the transmission - it's a fairly common problem.

could also be the cable, had the same issue in my 92 and it was a bad cable
