Found this article today.. thought id post it up to share!

Interesting.. 10% fuel increase. Not huge.. but at least it wont be as bad as 20mpg! :lol:

i would assume that's a 2.0 version and such a shame on the lack of DI, serious gains could be made with DI

146 HP and a 10% increase in fuel economy vs current models?
Lets see if I can do some math:
Current N/A 2.5L models make 170hp
The "new" ones do 146, but get 10% better fuel economy
so 170hp/146hp= ~86% or loss of 14% HP to gain 10% fuel economy.
If Subaru's so concerned about economy, they should:
a. Bring the diesels over
b. Put all models on a weight loss diet (and make them look less like their toyota overseers)
c. reintroduce the 2.2L engine.
I prefer choices A. and B, but the last 2.2L made around the same HP as this upcoming motor while having more than 10% fuel economy advantage.

Oh well, there's the death of the EJ. I don't look forward to it getting harder and harder to get parts over the next few decades. And i fully intend to own mine that long.

horrible. so the subaru can be even slower than they are stock. yeah! i agree with mike. the boxer desil gets awsome gas mpg.

The EJ has been dying for a while now...Subaru has been struggling to get it to meet emissions.
I suspect the turbo models will be getting direct injection, because I don't think they'll be able to get the low compression engines to pass emissions, and you can't (easily) run high compression turbo engines on standard port injection and pump gas.
I don't blame them on holding off on DI for all their models though. It is expensive, and it has its problems as it is still fairly new technology for gas engines despite being around for well over a decade. My old Mazdaspeed3 had DI and, well, it had issues lol

My only experience with direct injection, has been my mates 90's galant, GDI (Dunno if they were JDM only)
It's shit. Utter shit. That car is a gutless piece of shit with some really weird problems (but it looks badass though :p ). I sure hope the tech has moved on since then! They've had a decade to learn, so lets hope it's not all bad.

Say goodbye to tbe systems, so really no use for any performance exhaust at all (including cbe for non-turbo diesels).
Bumped this instead of the other diesel thread, looks good on paper, horrible in real world applications. He's a quick rundown of emissions that the average person can understand. FYI I'm not an engineer so maybe my ideas are flawed. I just learn this stuff to teach technicians about it.
Egr's- gets the unburned fuel vapors back through the engine to burn cleaner. Negatives- more parts that cost money to start and more parts to break, added heat in the engine compartment hard on plastics, hotter exhaust raises nox (see below)
DPF's- trap the carbon leaving the exhaust, lowers nox level.
depending on application, the soot has to be burned out of the filter when it does, large cloud of smoke releasing some back into the atmosphere anyways.
Negatives-Added cost to vehicle purchase, anywhere from $4k to $10k, more parts to break, damage or just not work and the expensive filter that eventually needs to be replaced down the road. So you go to the dealer since it's too complicated to work on for the average Joe, not too mention technically illegal to work on certain parts and the dealer finds all kinds of other items you should take care of.
Ultra low sulphur fuel, (called ulsd and is 15ppm) also low sulphur oil. Sulphur is an excellent lubricant so engines now see increased mechanical wear and tear. Now when refining diesel it can no longer be a by product of gasoline, raising the cost of both diesel and gasoline since there is less need for the byprodut after refining. Prior to 2007 emissions for diesel which came out in late '06, (but all oils and fuels needed to be researched and ready in use by late '05) ulsd it was a byproduct but now that's not happening, (take look at history of fuel prices from august 2005 for both gas and diesel since, I dare you).
New for 2010 emissions
Def (diesel exhaust fluid)- used to help burn the soot out of a dpf.
Negatives- costs around $5 a gallon, $10 or more for price gougers. Smells horrible like ammonia, is corrosive, depletes in sunlight and heat.
-Space reserved- I might add more later, I should be working on this junk right now instead of typing.

Subaru (and all car manufacturers) need to quit monkeying around with existing technology and move foward with direct injection and Diesels. The Diesel engine is fundamentally a better design than a gasoline engine, and thus, Its way more efficient. Its just more expensive, and there's all these ridiculous bureaucracies that are stopping them from being used widely in the states.
I guess this is what we have to put up with in order to avoid socialism.

I wouldn't mind a highly efficient diesel (around 60 to 70mpg) for a DD but I still want my v1000 100 turbo super car that runs on cute babies (no ugly ones), endangered species, and unicorns with the byproduct of mustard gas and lethal radiation

Considering they cited a 2.0L engine, I would guess that's what they were referring to with the power figures. Anybody could step a 2.5L engine back and get better fuel economy with some EM tweaks.
And actually, that's not bad for a 2.0L N/A engine...

Phase II 2.2's put out 142hp, so you're right, by a slight amount.

The EJ204 (a n/a DOHC 2.0L motor) is rated at 155/155.
So I think the EJ204 is the benchmark used to compare this new "FB20" engine (or is there a newer DOHC EJ20 motor after the '204?):
EJ204 DOHC N/A makes 155hp
The new ones do 146, but get 10% better fuel economy
so 155hp/146hp= ~94.2% or loss of 6% HP to gain 10% fuel economy.
That makes for better numbers.
