I was on my way home from college. Left at 9pm Friday rather than 4pm Thursday for once, leaving all my tools in my dorm. I get 30 minutes from campus, an hour and 15 minutes away from my house, and the bolt attaching the belt tensioner to my alternator snapped. No power and no steering capabilities really sucks when your trying to manuver a sharp turn at 70 mph. After pulling the car to the side of the turn and waiting for my parents to arrive we got to assess the damage. Saw the bolt was snapped and then realizing that it resulted in my axle boot blowing out. We rigged the alternator back up to sension with a rope which allowed me to drive it back home. Pics tomorrow when it's light out.

is that broken bolt the one that goes thru=front to back or the tensioner bolt=up and down?

must be the tensioner, right?

ive heard several storied about those breaking, you would think the belt would go first...

biggest pissoff, is it broke the CV boot?

lol thas nutz. mine broke a couple weeks ago.. i just ordered one from the dealership and just have to pick it up...

you might be able to find another bolt at a home improvement store, i have done that before, less than going to the dealer.

that reminds me of this one time, in my prizm, where the old mechanic had left off the alt. pivot bolt, you know the big one? so only the adjuster bolt was holding the alternator on. found it in a walmart parking lot, and had to rig up something using washers, a couple of sockets and a huge bolt.

at least you figured it out with out dropping a ton of cash :smile:

I don't know what the deal is with that bolt but mine broke last month too! My side-of-the-road fix was to stick a bolt underneath alternator bracket, through the tensioner rail, with a nut on the other side.

The part is cheap at the dealership, $3.19. When you put it back on torque it down pretty good. I learned the hard way - didn't torque it down enough and it broke AGAIN after just one week!

Its the one that goes through the tensioner and into the alternator
called the dealership the next day and got 2 for free
and yes the cv joint is bad...autocrossed it yesturday with the bad cv joint and little power steering fluid

i checked out a couple local hardware stores, but they didnt have a bolt long enough that was threaded all the way up. Since it was real cheap from the dealer, i just got one from them.
