View Full Version : Cheap Muffler Suggestions?

So, for the past 10,000 kms my 1996 Legacy L wagon has been making an annoying whistling noise whenever I'm over 3000 rpm and accelerating or climbing a hill. The sound seems to be coming from the exhaust and I'm guessing one of the baffles in the muffler has broken or something like that as the sound seems to be coming right from the back.

Just wondering, my local performance auto parts store sells "glass pack" mufflers for $30 and I was thinking of grabbing one since they are super cheap and easy to install but I'm not to stoked about having a super loud straight-through muffler on the 'ol wagon, don't want to have to park with the honda civics you know? Any experience with these mufflers? How loud are they? Are there any comparably priced but quieter options? Thanks,

it is actually more likely that that noise is from a cracked weld or leak then from a bad muffler.

and yes glass packs are generally pretty loud.

if it is your muffler
you could look int Thrush mufflers. i think i got mine for 20 bux shipped off amazon. its still an oval muffler to. not to loud on my eg33 wagon, but then again, its not really broken in either.

Thanks for the suggestion! I haven't gotten around to putting the car up on stands and doing a leak-check yet, but now that you mention it, when I bought the car one of the exhaust hangers wasn't hooked up to the rubber support so that would put extra stress on the surrounding hangars, I'll start my search around those first I guess. Thanks again!

I got my muffler on Ebay, its a Twin loop muffler. It sounds pretty good, but not overly loud.
I think I paid like $40-45 shipped for it.

Its basically a resonator that goes through the muffler housing twice.

I did an oval magnaflow muffler, it's quiet at idle and gives a nice deep tone when accelerating. I think it gives off the perfect sound level, but that's just me.
