What car do you have?
and are you looking for in-dash or the portable windscreen mounted GPS?

It's cheaper/easier with a Garmin/TomTom GPS. If it ever gets outdated you just sell it and get a new one.
OEM in-dash GPS systems are over priced and cost a fortune to update map data.

Just buy a phone with gps.

Plus one. The navigation systems on Android platforms and the iPhone are basically just as good as a dedicated GPS. Plus, you won't have to worry about it getting stolen, and there's less stuff to carry around.

I love my HTC hero from sprint ($50 no mail in rebates at walmart) with a $69 unlimited data/text plan and 450 min. Sprint only charges you for calling land lines. You don't use minutes by calling or receiving calls from other cell phones. but for that price go for an HTC EVO as it's faster and has a larger hi res screen. and if you live in an area that has 4g it is a 4g phone.

The sprint navigation is suburb and you also have a choice of Google nav but the sprint one works better.

pick up a cheap universal mount for your car and get an in car charger from best buy as the cheap ones die really quickly.

My G2 has navigation as well, and I also carry a dedicated GPS unit in the car just in case. Problem is that the phone only works if you have a signal (which is not a problem if you are an urban crawler, but can be a huge problem if you are out in the sticks) and the dedicated GPS units aren't that comprehensive unless you get an OMG expensive one.

That being said, a $400-$500 brand new in-dash navigation unit is going to be garbage. The good ones start at $1000.

If you have never lost cell signal before, you are either incredibly lucky, or you haven't gone that far out of the way before. I can think of half a dozen places I can go to right now where I wouldn't have a signal, regardless of what phone or what carrier. :)

And what I meant by the cell coverage thing anyway was if you were trying to get directions when you didn't have a signal. If you look up directions when you have a signal, then travel somewhere where you don't, you'll be fine. But, if you were to get lost in the middle of nowhere with no cell signal, and you needed to look up directions, you'd be screwed, because all phones have to download the map data and directions. If you have no signal, it can't download that data. Any phone with GPS is capable of finding its GPS location without a cell signal, but without the map data to go along with that location, its pretty much worthless.
