So for a long while now, probably around 9 months I've been getting a "tick tick tick tick tick tick" noise constantly from the engine throughout the drive...

could this be the notorious 'sewing machine' noise? or is something bad happening?

all i have is an spt axleback, rest is stock 2.5gt

Mine's always done that since I've had it. I don't know exactly what it is but I do know that its no big deal, it's just something about these cars.

Mine is loud since I've done my cams.

injector noise most likely, my EJ22 was loud when it was cold out.

Injector noise and my 96 has HLA's that can be taken out and bled. All Subaru's make that ticking noise.

Also sometimes different oils can quiet the sound down. I accidently put in semi-synthetic or w/e it's called. When I have been running full synthetic and the noise got more noticeably to me.

Is there any real way to turn it down so its not as loud?

Mine got louder and louder as time went by

Try the seafoam treatment? It worked for my 91 Toyota pickup and 98 Forester

oh man i hate hearing ... specially i have a squeeky belt sometimes ... that drives me crazy and the gravel guards under my car are loose i think so anytime i hear hit a bump it raddles like crazy.

my resolution... 2 tens in the back cranked up 11

then you cant hear it ... or anything haha

Check your valve lash.

Does the ticking noise get faster with the increased rpms?

Possibly lifter noise.

mine seems to be pretty constant... maybe a tiny bit faster when accelerating

I work on heavy trucks, and with the increased technology which allows us to quiet down the engines we get the "ticking" noise complaints regularly. There is always going to be some valve/lifter noise, but if it's extremely loud it may be time to get the valve lash adjusted.

Looking through the "Liberty manual" for 98-03 the valve lash for the 2.0 and the 2.5 is stated as:

Intake mm (in): 0.20±0.02 (0.0079±0.0008)
Exhaust mm (in): 0.25±0.02 (0.0098±0.0008)

Check your service manual for proper specs........

Valve lash is one of the noises your are hearing. Others are injectors and exhaust pulsate.

It could be something serious like valve / valve guides worn out or damaged.

All subaru heads make the tick tick sound after 80,000 clicks. The only real way to fix this is to get your heads machined and inspected. Its around $500 without gaskets but your motor will sound quiet and your heads shouldnt make a peep unless under load.
