Looking to do a tune up!!

Ok well its time to do a little tune up. Im in need of new sparkplugs, and im looking at getting one step hotter. Now im more towards NGKs but i can do something else. Also looking for a set of plug wires, anything other than OEM.. Now the other thing i want to do is the MSD mod, how hard is it,and where can i buy one of those clips.. Let me know what you guys think

why? are you running rich? And by that, I don't mean what you *think* is rich, that you have empirical data showing that you're running rich like a wideband AFR or your sparkplugs shows sign that you are running extremely rich?

Even with an MSD coil, you're not going to be dumping any extra fuel and/or air into your mixture to the point that you're going to absolutely need a hotter spark. Your ECU will make sure of it. In fact you may end up losing power because your ECU may detect extra knock and pull timing.

Same with the plugwires.

But if you want to do it, I'd hold off on the hotter plugs, get some Magnecore or NGK 8-9mm wires and the MSD coil if your engine is compatible (no 2.5l AFAIK).

Also, Champion or NGK coppers are plenty. Id stay away from platinums if youre goal is to maintain a "hot" spark, iridiums are ok, but they cost 3-4x the amount of a copper but last 2x as long (if you get my math).

well i have a 97 gt, so am i capable of doing the msd. and yes im running rich, plugs show it and so does the black all over my re-bumper and all of my gaskets are fine...

Hotter plugs aren't going to help you with any of the problems you are experiencing (I'm not sure you understand what the heat ranges for plugs indicate)

And soot/carbon doesn't always mean running rich. You could be burning oil. If you were running so rich that you were getting soot on the rear bumper, the CEL would be on.
