What does it sound like when you have no reception? Is it just plain ol' static, or does it change depending on if the engine is running, engine RPM, electrical load, etc?

FM runs way higher frequency that pretty much anything on the car and isn't as susceptible to RFI. AM runs a much lower frequency and is very susceptible to RFI from the ignition system and the alternator.

In other words, check the condition of your tune parts (spark plugs and wires) and the condition of the alternator.

The am/fm reception on aftermarket decks is sometimes lacking than what you get with a factory radio.

When looking at the AM/FM sensitivity, the higher the number, the better the reception. I think most of aftermarket radios come in at around 9dBf to 11dBf. A difference of 3dBf is almost doubling the sensitivity. So a radio with 12dBf would be nearly twice as powerful as a radio with 9dBf.

So its possible that the new radio just doesn't have that good of sensitivity.
