Going to do a rally race build, legacy or impreza?

Thinking about gutting, caging, and sooping up my car. I came across a 98 Impreza 22B roller for 700 bucks also. Should I tear apart my nice car that would be fun to race or build an Impreza from the ground up??????

Pfffft.. Impreza's are overrated.

I am in the middle of something similar to what your want to do. Mines a Time Attack legacy but Rally is very similar to build.

Gen 2 Legacy weights as much as a Gen 2 Impreza. Gen 2 Legacy is built of a Gen 1 Impreza chassis.

Your choices really come down to how the car looks and weight class. If for some reason you want the lightest chassis available the GC 2dr chassis is the best option. I highly doubt that you found one of 400 22b chassis for $700.. Its just not realistic..

Since your asking this question on SLi and not Nasioc I would say shit go for the Gen 1 Legacy it weights in close to the 4dr Gen 1 impreza and is almost the same car.

If your looking for a more updated look go for Gen 2. Stay away from Gen 3+ there extremely heavy compared to the older years however they do move when you throw enough cash at it.

RHD could be a Type-RA (Race Altered) There 2.0ltr w/ 5MT 4.44 & DCCD. But that not really important since its probably a basic version 2-6 chassis..

I'm not much of an Impreza fan so I don't know much about them. Benn messing with suby's for about a year now. I'm not worried about more modern looks or anything, I actually like 1st gen the way it is. Just needs a cage and more lights, suspension, seats wheels and tires to start.

Since you are in Bend, talk to the guys at All Wheels Driven. I've talked with Barrett a bit over there and been to the shop, he never seems to have any problem just chatting about Subarus :) I know they've prepped both Legacies and Imprezas.

For me personally, I'd do a Legacy. There aren't many parts specifically for Legacies, but you can get just about anything you could want (aside from body parts) from any of the gens of Impreza up until the most recent one. And I think the longer wheelbase would come in handy in low traction situations.

If you don't fancy monkeying about trying to remember which parts fit and vice versa then the GC Impreza has a much larger support network. But we're diehards around here and love working with big hammers and torches.

Ya, Im 6'1". Found a N/A legacy for dirt cheap. Gunna do open light N/A For next year. Have to drop the money on a certified cage, then a good motor.

And yes, my vote for prezza too, being the smaller and lighter chassis, it's far more appropriate and competative in it's class. If you just want a cheap rally hack though, a BC is more than adequate. BC's are damn light too, almost the same as a GC, far lighter than gen2/3/4.

I don't think this is true - with race seats you'll sit lower and with a cage/removed headliner in you'll have more headroom for the helmet
Plus swapping to a non-airbag steering wheel with a 320mm diameter will get some additional space. I have a friend of mine who autox's a 95L coupe with a full interior (just race seats) and he's easily 6'2" and 210lbs.

Well you see way more rally Impreza's than Legacy's so that should answer your question.

I am 6'4" 280lbs.

My friends GC Chassis w/ Sparco's + rails/sliders, Sparco Wheel w/ shorty hub, & no headliner = very tight.

My Track BD chassis w/ similar variations to the above gives me +2" both up/down & front/back

The BC chassis is even smaller then the GC chassis in the above configuration.. I blame it on the dash and my shins hitting them.
The BE chassis is extremely tight on the inside, I blame the bulky interior, a pillars, etc..
The GD chassis feels like the BE with similar issues.

Its all personal preference. That 2" makes or breaks the ability to have a car with a sunroof and helmet. And we are not even talking about the loss of head room when a roll cage is installed. Every inch counts for my gigantic build.
