View Full Version : My clutch cable snaped!

I was in Ridgewood, NJ and I went to go back to the car to start it and the clutch just popped to the floor.. I was like WTF? So yeah the cable broke and the lock nut is that something I need to keep or does the replacement cable come with new hardware? And How long does it take to replace?


It sucked because My battery was just about out on the phone and the first call to AAA + they connected me to the NJ state police but the 2nd call they did right.

everyone keeps saying they never heard of a clutch cable breaking before assuming this was a original cable I got 230K on my car now.

Keep all the old nuts, etc. I replaced mine on my old impreza, it didn't snap per se, but it felt like it was stretching, so I found the newest subie in the junkyard with one and just did it. I think it took under an hour, but it's been about 4 years ago so my memory's fuzzy.

New cable was only $23 so I get new hardware sucks it broke

Too bad I don't have another cable clutch car to test all the other Subaru's I drove were late models with hydro clutches I'm sure the effort of the pedal should still be the same?

The difference is a well working hydro system is consistent, whereas I always felt the spring rebound on the cable. Also I had to adjust it several times a year, and I'm pretty sure I killed my first clutch b/c I didn't know that the cable needed adjusting. With the hydraulic system, you bleed the system every couple years, and it feels super smooth all the time.

That's how I was trying to describe it, it feels like a spring, it gets progressively harder as you push it down, instead of the same effort the whole way, like hydraulic.

Very easy I just wonder did I adjust it right? The clutch grabs about 1-1.5" from the floor the old cable was a bit higher. Also it feels super light now.

Since the old cable was rusted/breaking, I wouldn't be suprised at all it if feels much lighter now. The old cable was probably sticking badly.

yeah it feels really good now and it's been a week so far
