View Full Version : Removed my car from my engine/tranny today

So today I pulled my '97 legacy from my fresh 2.5 and 5MT. Pulled things all apart yesterday and yanked things in a couple minutes today and then got it all back to my house to go into my '98 with a blown HG and auto tranny. It was much easier pulling the car from the engine I think.

The auto is gonna come out the same way and this will get dropped back in one piece. It has a new clutch and all the engine seals done with new HGs done correctly and a new timing belt. It's gonna be nice to not have any oil leaks anymore.

The hood opens up 90 degrees, why take it off? It was open all the way but it had fallen by the time I took pictures. It's smashed so I dont really care about it. Normally I tie them up to the steering wheel to keep them up. I have the hood off in my truck right now through because it doesn't open far enough to swap the motor.

I can see how that would be much easier since you are working in dirt. Those engine hoists don't roll in the dirt, esp. with a load on it.

You guy's know you can take the bonnet stay out, and hook it on that little tab on the strut tower right? For das vertical bonnet?

Anyway, nice work on the pull. I've seen a mate do the drop-the-whole-engine-and-subframe-out-the-bottom method before, complete with suspension (the car was a write off). So many options :p

Yea, I didn't know if the whole unit (engine/tranny) would clear the front support or not, so I was ready to just cut the front of the car off. Seeing it clear has made the swap in my '98 that much easier by not having to separate the engine and tranny at all and just dropping it in as one unit and plugging everything back in.

You could of always dropped the subframe and lifted the body over the engine :-D

That's what I'd do if I were doing it on a lift, at least with the 5MT. Lining up the engine and trans during reinstallation is (for me) the worst part of the job, and it is a lot easier with both out of the car. Or, if you were removing the engine to do head gaskets, you wouldn't even need to do anything with the transmission.
