I searched and haven't quite found what I was looking for.
simply put:
Will a 1995 (auto trans, ODB2) 2.2 engine be a plug and play swap into my 99 GT? (presently a 2.5, auto trans)??
I like the idea of non interference and no head gasket issues
Every time I find a thread on it, it usually a ODB1 donor)
Thanks!

I could be wrong but I don't think you need to switch transmissions. Just engines.

Yeah, I was thinking just engines. Just wanted to mention that they were both auto trans cars. Something about manuals and no EGRs...or something

You will be fine. You might have to splice a few wires but otherwise it is a quick swap.

Which wires are you talking about?

it can be done. the previous owner of my '98 outback had it done. now i need another new engine. the lack of power is a very frutrating thing. if you live in an area that has many hills, you better get some power adders. i am strugling to find decent used engine. everything i have found has over 100k on it. call me crazy, but if i am going to be putting a new engine in my car, i want it to have less than 100k on it. and where do these people get off charging what they do for an engine with over 100k? look on ebay, i saw a 2.2 with 110k for like 1300 bucks! this is the last subaru i will own, untill subaru sends the diesel legacy over here.

I am not worried about power. My other car (which I very happy with) is a Ford Festiva. Our other subaru wagon is an auto trans with a 2.2. I like the 2.2 for not having the headgasket issues..
If you want power, you could probably go with the 2.5 again, but would risk headgaskets... GL what ever you decide...

i am about ready to just buy a different car. as long as i have to put a new engine in my car, i want to fine something with low mileage. it doesnt make any sense to me to replace y engine with one that has over 100k on it(which is all you can find). apparently, 95 was the only year that subaru made a dual port 2.2(the hardest fucking engine to find). i have found a few single port engines, but he says they wont work because of the exhaust. he doesnt have any manifolds for the single port 2.2. i havent had my car in over a month. i am thinking of just getting a jdm engine to make my life simpler. this is going to be the very last subaru i own. when it dies, i am buying a ford model t. i want something simple and easy. i figure the model t because there are more technically advanced lawn mowers out there.

I would have thought that a single port would work if you used the ssingle port Y pipe below..? Just a guess though. I wouldn't worry too much about mileage. I can get a 95 legacy for $500. By time I part it out, I will probably re coup a good part of the cost.. Thats the way I am looking at it..

you could always get a MY96 2.5. It is a single year 2.5 with hydraulic lifters....interesting note is they do not have the same head gasket issues as all other 2.5's. i am assuming that is because of the hydraulic valve passageways giving a bit more cooling ability. i read somewhere on an ultralight airplane website that the 2.5's, which are very common in ultralights, only have this headgasket issue due to a phenomenon which allows extremely hot air bubbles to settle in the passageways right at the head gasket area. these air bubbles are apparently impossible to get rid of due to the chemical nature of the simple H2O release of oxygen at high temps. just my 2cents.

I've considered doing this to my 02 Legacy with a 99-01 2.2l motor. [I'll turbo it if I do though]

If you use a phase I ej22 [98 and previous] all you should have to do is reuse your intake manifold and throttle body from your ej25, thats where a lot of the sensors are anyways. All you will really be using from the ej22 is the block and heads. The original tranny will work fine, it'll bolt up to any ej series motor.

You don't have to worry about transmissions... the worst case is you may need to modify or reuse the starter..

Swapping engines w/ ecu's

-95' EJ22E harness can run a 97' EJ25D & ECU
-97' EJ25D harness can run a 98' EJ25D w/ 96' EJ22E ECU.

However... examples show.
-97' EJ25D harness can not run a 98' EJ25D w/ 98' EJ25D ECU.

its all about mixing and matching... your best bet is to stay within the same revisions.....

Example:
Rev.1 95-97
Rev.2 98-99

So in the case of my 97 outback. I am considering putting in an EJ22 from a 96. That should be a simple swap right?

Thanks.

Should be.. but there is always evap/emissions system issues when swapping back and forth..

I can not give you a solid answer simply because I have never done it.. i only know what I have done in the past. Hopefuly someone else will fill in the blanks.

Everything I have read says it should be an easy swap. Basically just use your intake manifold setup.

I have an ej22 sitting my garage from a 97 Impreza Outback Sport. Has around 160,000 miles on it, fresh timing belt and water pump. I am in Minot, ND also so not that far away, PM me for more info if you are interested.

The shop that has build 3 motors for me has a 30k (I think, might have been 50k miles though.) Ej22e for $850. If anyone is interested...

the 2.5 I'm putting in my car was intended for a airplane, only mine has different cams. But I thought they generally used a ej251/ej253 hybrid because the ej25d is the bastard child of subaru motors.
