Hey all, im going to turbo my 2003 BE's EJ25 after winter is over. In the meantime, im wondering what is a safe level of psi for thr stock engine? Did some searching on here and found 4-5, 6, and 9. Anything definite? And what mods would i have to do to make 10-12 psi safe?

Thanks!

A bunch of guys on here are around 9-10 max with stock internals.

check out anothernords supercharger thread. I think he runs about 5 to 6 psi. I wouldn't run more then that on a stock engine.

Haha conflicting statements. Damn i was just hoping to get one straight up answer.

^ that's because there isn't one. all you can guarantee is that wear on parts will increase with boost pressure. More power causes more stress period.

but you can still blow up a motor just as easily with 5 psi as you can with 10 psi, just that with all else constant, your odds are better at 5.

what where you going to do for engine management?

I was planning on going with the basics, BOV and intercooler with the gauges to monitor.

I can get a good deal on the turbo, intercooler, and BOV for around $500. I have about 750 to spend when the time comes, what else should I look into?

Well you are going to need some sort of engine magment, like a piggyback. So that will set you back a few hundred more.
I have read alot about the Greddy Emanage. Take a look at that. And some have used the pp6 too, but I have heard it is not as good as the Emanage for a FI build.

5-6 will be safe. I run 11psi but I have EJ22T internals and an ECU that is meant for boost. I will probably run more once I install a standalone EMS.

It's all about e.m. with a good tune you could get more psi, wrong tune and you could blow her up at 4psi. Heck I blew an ej25 without boost, lol.

Haha ok I'll look for a cheap piggyback on ebay or something.

And we're in the same club Bokem, I blew up a 25 without boost too hahaha

Depends on your definition of "safe." I say no amount of boost on a stock NA EJ25 is "safe" because you are greatly increasing you odds of damaging the engine, even at 5 psi.

BTW you need to do a LOT of reading on turbocharging an engine. Based on what I've seen in here, you are completely forgetting about several key parts to even installing a turbo on an engine, let alone getting it to run properly. Do not buy a single part until you fully understand what you need, because I guarantee if you don't fully understand what you are doing, you will destroy your engine.

My family owns an autobody and full engine service garage.

Anything I'm ignorant to/forgetting, they'll handle it.

Most kits you can buy to turbo/supercharge these engines such as raptor, AVO turbo kit, etc run at about 6-8psi max! Mostly around 6.. and wouldn't go much above 7 at all on these engines so I hear.

A good place to do research is RS25's forums. There are several turbo on NA engine builds there. The threads are long but I suggust reading through as many as you can, and maybe ask some questions.
Here is a link to the Turbo and Supercharger subforum:

Your car is MAP-based, meaning its much harder to just throw a turbo on. The car will throw a CEL and poop at you as soon as you boost, unless you get a good engine management system that can clamp the airflow signal and throw more fuel at the car based on load.

The proper way to turbo your car would start with getting an Emanage Ultimate, or another GOOD piggyback. Don't skimp with EM! If you can tune well (or at least safe), then the car should be reliable. I've been running boost for over a year with no problems because I have engine management and good luck.

I've tested the stock injectors, and they're basically only good to 5 psi anyway. If you get larger injectors, you can basically run as much boost as you want until you start getting knock. But with your budget, just aim for 5-6 psi and be done.

Are you going with custom up/down pipes? Or a turbo-crossmember and WRX exhaust stuff? Plan for oil feed/drain? Intake and intercooling?

You should look into supercharging too. If I ever do FI its going to be with a supercharger.
Consider: With a supercharger you don't have to worry about oil feed/drain or exhaust stuff.
Boost comes on way lower in the RPM range/ no tubo lag. And it still can make the 5-6psi.
Price is comparable... well not really but I havent looked at turbo prices lately.
And its much rarer to do a supercharger build than a turbo build.
Its basically the same principal though.

Hmmm I checked out some supercharger info, very interesting. Found some used ones on eBay for like 3/4ths the price of the turbo + accessories. Didn't know if they would fit though.
