The fronts are different. The rears are the same.

MT vs AT use different style front axles.
Rear diff R160 uses the same axles no matter what tranny,

I have a question along the same lines. My cv squeaks when I make a hard left. I noticed the boot was torn. Is this something that I can just clean out and replace the boot? ($15 fix) or do I have to replace the CV half shaft at $90?

If its making noise you have to replace the axle.

Changing the boot is only good before the noise starts.

Hmmmm i am a little confused myself.. When i cross reference the front axles on car-parts.com auto / manual come up as two different categories. When i search online i get various sources telling me a length range from 26" - 29" When i check eBay there is no difference... So I am at a loss with no solid facts.

I do know manual fronts are the same length and interchangeable (r/l)

Anyone care to go into detail?

hmm. so AT and MT have different part # im assuming then.
its alawys funny on the forums no one is 100% positive on answers. but thanks for chiming in.
im still coming up with my much needed parts list for the junk yard, so i still have time to figure this one out.

My memory sucks, but I'm pretty sure I reused my auto trans axles when I swapped to manual, since the ones from my parts car (manual) weren't in very good shape.

well U.S.A axles dont even list different axles between auto-manual, so im guessing theres no real differences

So its settled.. Even "if" they have different length axles they will work regardless of transmission type.

I picked up an axles for my 5 speed legacy BD,
the next week I installed an axle on an auto Impreza GM,
both axles were the same part number, if that means anything.

sweet thanks guys. for all the replies. i've finally "broke down" and bought a new axle from vatozone. i know, i know its not oem quality but it is brand new. cheap, no core charge, and the best feature, life time warranty! i'll post updates when i have a boot failure or noise.

ok, my 99 has a clicking CV, I am probably gonna do a manual swap and the donor car is an outback (not sure on year). If the outback has ABS what are the odds the sensor rings are the same? I will look into what year the donor car is Monday or Tuesday if that info is necessary.

Should be the same if the donor car is within the same model year. Though be careful, the OBs got bigger brakes (usually) so the ABS rings might differ on later models.

Bigger brakes than the GT limited? worth grabbing for an upgrade?
