Since I had my car I knew it had an exhaust leak from the middle of the car. It's a DD beater so I wasn't too inclined to do much about it till recently when the center pipe seperated right where it necks down to a small diameter. Since driving with my new "race exhaust" is getting annoying, I'm looking at replacements but the $200 center pipes from Autozone (http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/Bosal-Muffler/1996-Subaru-Legacy/_/N-j4zs5Z9l36h?counter=8&itemIdentifier=529712_0_1903_) and Advance Auto (http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_Resonator-Assembly-Walker_18381582-P_689_R%7CGRPEXHAAMS_915541324___) seem a bit steep.

I found this center section (http://www.car-stuff.com/carparts/subarulegacy19951999replacementreps96110222709.html?prodSlot=SEO+Make+Model+Part+Page%3A2#manufacturer) from an unknown supply company and it looks exactly like the store bought stuff. I'm curious if anyone has bought anything from these guys for their Legacy or any other car and what your experience was like. I like the thought of saving $110 but obviously don't want a bad experience and waste $82+shipping.

The center section or the "mid-pipe" is just a standard pipe. You can have any exhaust shop FIX your "Race Exhaust" or weld in a new pipe all together.

The issue with your DD beater is not that the pipes broke but that the flanges are probably rusted to oblivion. That being said if you take off the old pipe most likely your going to destroy your flanges..

Do you really want to mess with your axle back or cat section..

I am in the same boat... my Outback DD had the same pipe break do to .. ummm.. Offroading :-D and I never really cared about fixing it until the exhaust smell was to much\.. After looking at it the simplest method was to just reweld the broken section and be done with it.

There are some shops that will re-do all your pipes from the cat back to the muffler for under $400.. This is a better method since they will have to deal with the rusty flanges..

Anyways good luck with your choice.

Yep go with an exhaust shop. Much cheaper and you don't get dirty.

From what I remember the flanges weren't too bad. The break looks like fatigue due to it being right at a stress riser in the pipe. I'm not going to pay a shop to do what I'm perfectly capable of doing myself, but if it's weldable I'll do that on my own.

Gotta go to a friend's house for the welder. My stupid house doesn't have a 220 line in the garage!
