View Full Version : Failed Whiteline KTA124 Lateral Link

Had a set of the Whiteline KTA124 arms (Liberty specific parts) installed for between 14 - 16 months, loved the adjustment and ability to get a wheel alignment right, and recommended them to friends and on forums.

2 days ago the car was up on a hoist getting checked over and the mechanic points in amazement at the left hand, front of the rear Lateral Link (which adjusts Toe), this is what we found;

I have another picture of it still on the car (it's on a different computer, and will upload it later today or tonight), as it couldn't be changed - back to the stock arm, as I don't carry a spare Lateral Link in the car...

The car has never been ran up a gutter or been involved in a rear ender.

I sent the (still to be uploaded here) picture of the arm still on the car to Whiteline - I admit it's not the best or clearest picture, I was using a phone, but you could still see where the arm had separated.
Whiteline got back to me saying (quote from email);

Hi,

As these are looking older and you said you bought them well over a year ago they are out of warranty.
I can also see allot of other performance bits on the car so I gather it gets some kind of hard work !.

We helped out with free bushes but we are unable to send out free arms as we do not have separate pieces they are made in kit form.

The photo does not show the crack maybe you can get it welded or it is a matter of buying new arms.

They look older as they where covered in grease/road grime as it's a daily driver (100km a day), and just like their sway bar bushes, the Lateral Link bushes squeak too.

The car has Whiteline swaybars, Whiteline ALK, Whiteline R.C.K (gee what a great thing they are, 4 sets I needed and they flogged out the knuckles on both sides...), Tein Flex coilovers, and these Lateral Links.

The "free bushes" he's talking about where to replace the Lateral Link bushes as no amount of grease would shut them up.

The car has never seen a track in it's life and rarely gets "beaten on", it is afterall an Outback.
And as I told him, the hardest work it gets is driving up a driveway or putting the dog in the back.

After pulling the arm off the car, I do not feel confident in getting it welded up.
They want to gouge me $524 (plus postage!!) for a new set of arms.

Summing up, if you have these make sure you check them - and if you have a R.C.K, check them too - and if you have a A.L.K on a newer STi, check them too - if you've got Whiteline Sway Bar Links, check them too.

C/N's - Lateral Link broke, Whiteline say GTFO.

UPDATE - After having a chat with Andy Nolan at Whiteline, he's sending out a new kit and i'll be sending back the old kit for them to find out what happened.

Sorry to hear that. Goes to show that just because there's a mass market for them, doesn't mean that they are reliable.

Whiteline was always overrated in my book. :smt019 to them. They should've given you some more support then that. Seeing as it looks like you've been loyal to their line of products.

I'm starting to lean that way too.

Oh, and when I got them they had a part number of "PROTOTYPE"...

Did they actually change the design of them/beef them up? Gezzzz... I was just looking to buy these since my coilovers are on the way in the mail. Now am really having 2nd thoughts. Did you track the car any or just Daily Driven?

that's unfortunate, lucky for you this didn't happen when you were driving! WL seems to have iffy QC, despite the circlejerk on NASIOC on any of their wares. I had delaminating issues with their Comp C strut tops right after they were installed, thankfully they sent a whole replacement piece; actually OAKOS just gave me a new complete set, but I still had to pay for the reinstall.

The squeaking is just a by product of the polyurethane; this is prevalent across all manufacturers of poly bushings, you do have to grease them as part of the maintenance (just one other thing that people overlook when they modify a car; every modification has both a positive and negative side).

No idea if they have changed the design or not.

Never seen a track in it's life, never even been to the carpark of a track...

I assume it did happen while I was driving, and could of been like that for a while. It didn't make any snap/pop noises, so I assumed everything was ok until it was on the hoist.

Whiteline Q.C has gone to shit in the last 18 months, and every forum this is on agrees with that.

I actually don't mind having to re-grease the bushes - have to do the sway bar bushes too, and usually do it a week or 2 after a big downpour as that washes the grease well and truly out.

Whiteline have sorted this out - they are sending me a new set of arms and I'm sending the old ones back so they can check them out.

The new arms just showed up from Whiteline along with a box of goodies (a T-Shirt, hat and lanyard) - so all sorted in the end.

Well its good they at least sorted it out in the end. Hopefully its just a fluke failure...they are dealing with peoples lives after all.

So whatever happened?

They ever tell you if the arms just broke at the welds and how are the new set holding up?

Was thinking about this set and wanted to see what others thought and experienced.

Did you ever find away to get them not to squel?

I rang them up a few months later and they just said the weld was "too hot" whatever that means.

Buuuuut, in the meantime - I've replaced the arms again, yes again. This time it the thread in the LH threaded section (the slug that is welded in the arm) on the "bent"/rearmost lateral link stripped on both sides.
Took it to a machine shop and they said it was shit quality steel used.
Rang Whiteline again, and sent them back again.
Another set is in, has been wheel aligned twice since and are holding up fine.
Whiteline told me I have no warranty from them anymore - I said I'd just start buying Japanese stuff now, you quality control and all...

I've been told that they are revising the arms and I'm the only person in the world anything like this has happened to.

Rrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhtttttt................. Mmmm hmmmm. Sure.

Back when you first posted this, I found out, you weren't the only 1. I had a customer who had a BugEye at the time, with similar issues. He no longer has the car, and Whiteline ended up refunding him as he didn't want anything to do with their products. He was more so worried about his family being in the car when 1 of their parts could fail.

How the f*ck do you send out parts labeled "Prototype" is beyond me. I've done some R&D with my E36 for some parts that have seen the light of day on tracks etc... and none of the manufacturers of those parts, ever sent out any part unless it was triple checked in quality control. Might have been a fluke lateral link etc... but still.

This usually happens when any company starts to hit it big. A businessman takes over, looks at profit margins, and outsources manufacturing to a plant with cheaper labor and lower quality standards.

It's a real shame, because Whiteline has a lot of products for our cars...

I want to know why the link is so short. did it get adjusted down like that after removal? Having it adjusted significantly shorter than stock would put quite a bit of additional force on the link and could be part of the reason for failure.

as for whiteline parts I've got most of the catalog on my car and couldn't be happier. although I will concede that most of their stuff is made in korea and china now.

They aren't that short - would them in so they'd fit in the box to send them back.
I know what you mean thou, that arms adjusts the toe, and being that short would of been some serious toe in!!

yeah that makes a lot of sense. I don't think you'd even be able to get them that short on the car anyhow.
