shaky left passing mirror? easy fix?

so anyways my new 98 legacy gt im noticing it has some small minor issues. one such issue is the left passing mirror of my car it shakes and rattles when on the highway or when i listen to bassy sounds inside my car. my right passing mirror is sturdy and doesn't shake or rattle at all!

how do i fix this issue? is it an easy fix? a step by step picture instructions would be nice im a noob at car fixes. thanks!

This is for an Impreza but all Subaru use the exact same mounting style

Start by prying the mirror cover from the top of the door panel, use a tack puller/flat head screwdriver for a prying tool.

The cover is held on by a suction cup system. Pressure holds it in...

At this point the side view mirror mounting bolts are exposed, but the wire connector is under the door panel.

Use a Philips screw driver and tighten the 3 screws.

Put the cover back on and your golden.

Actually there is one significant difference with the 2nd gen Legacy vs the above pictures of the Impreza. The lowest bolt can only be accessed by removing the interior door panel. That is just a couple screws also - pop the plastic covers off.

What part is actually unstable - does the entire mirror assembly itself move if you took your hands up to it and moved it? Or just the mirror inside the assembly?

Same as the cover piece. Just pry it off slowly.

I was actually going to start a post about this. My drivers side mirror glass shakes/wobbles at hiway speeds. It isnt a huge amount but it is enough to be really annoying. It is the mirror glass itself and not the whole side view mirror.

I thought I read somewhere that the glass itself isnt able to be removed from the housing.


Has anyone actually taken the mirrored glass out of the side view mirror housing?

yea its just the mirrored glass part that shakes/wobbles i actually havn't had the time to fix it this weekend like i wanted. does the fact that my mirror is the one shaking that there is a different step to fix it?

Yeah those three screws just secure the entire assembly - if it's just the glass itself I'm not sure - I tried to dismantle an assembly once to get to the mirror and it wasn't intuitive so I gave up.

i have had the glass part repaired on a gm vehicle before. i took it into a glass shop, he popped the glass mirror only off that was about to fall off, and put in these circular glue things and have not has a problem since. hope that helps.
