What software do I need to read OBD codes?

What software do I need to read my OBD codes? I have Ford specific (elmscan) and BMW specific (DIS/INPA), is there a Subaru specific one I need? I have 'ecuexplorer' but havent tried it yet, will it work on my 2000 2.5 Legacy or is it only for 2001 onwards?

Also, do I have to connect the test connectors together under the dash before it will read through the OBD port?

The test connectors are only for diagnostics and will not activate the OBD2 port. Software wise are you looking to hack an ecu via the port?

No, simply to read and reset any error codes there may be and also to see whats going on.

got ecuexplorer to connect ok. Because my idle was such a mess i just pressed 'reset ecu'. This gave me a whole new engine!! cured everything. However, after driving 30 or 40 miles it seems to be learning its old ways, the idle has now gone from pretty good back to lumpy and nearly stalling at junctions again.

well if your check engine light is on swing buy autozone and get the codes read for free. then ask for a print out of what could be wrong based on the code(s).

Cant, Im in the UK. however, The only code i had was a historical knock sensor one which I put down to the timing being out. My Light isnt on at all.

could be a bad knock sensor causing that code. what was the code?

It could but its not coming on now, it was just in the 'historical' list
