So I have a 200 watt JVC stereo, and I want to put in a subwoofer. The headunit has a sub output, and I can handle the concept of wiring that in. Now my question is, do I have to have an amp to power the sub, or will the stereo handle it?

you deffenatly need an amp. I'm guessing your stereo is putting out 50w max x4 if it is a 200w. And you need more like 800w max, 300 RMS to power a subwoffer.

how many watts do you want for a subwoffer and if you already have a subwoffer how many watts is it because when you know the watt of the sub it will help you figure out the watts you need for the amp.

The sub output on your head unit is a line level output, not a powered level. If you just hook the sub up to that it won't power the sub. You need to run a line from the sub output to a sub amp (so yes you have to get an amp.)

You could also go with a powered subwoofer, which has the amp built in. However, that restricts your options for other sound equipment, as you can't use a powered sub's amp for other speakers... At least, you can't on the ones I've seen, that may have changed.

The amp in the stereo won't power a sub. It won't even power most higher end woofers sufficiently.

Any updates here?
Curious to see what you ended up choosing.
If you post your subwoofer model or even its size, and your budget for the install, Im sure we can help!

I didn't think anyone was interested, but I got this sub/amp:

I set it up in the cargo area and ran cable under the floor. Sounds pretty good.
I also disabled the blue illumination. Not really my style.

seems like a nice setup. I will be doing a lightweight 10" sub molded into my left hand side trunk cavity. I'll post pics and write up a nice tutorial if anyone wants to see / learn how to make molded fiberglass boxes. Should be the started at the end of the month or so.
