I might be getting a '99 LGT, was my sisters but she got a truck, the question I have is will a gen. one legacy transmission swap directly into the '99 LGT cause it doesn't always go into gear when I put it in D. Reverse works fine everytime but, to me, once the transmission is warmed up it won't go right into gear, like its hesatating to take first. I don't know exactly what to look for as the cause of hesatation, or if a gen. one 4Eat will swap right in. Any input would be amazing.

A 5MT from 93-2005 will bolt right in with the right driveshaft (into the rear diff), but the autos require more work. Sounds like you have an auto though, so my recommendation is to stick with a 99+ 4EAT.
Your best course of action though is to drain the ATF and refill it (do this a couple of times if it's not been done in the last 60k).

Another question, would an auto from a 1998 forester work as a direct replacement with the matching rear diff. if needed?

It sounds like you have worn low clutch seals. The parts can be bought reasonably cheap (they're under $100NZ, so maybe $70US??), and once the trans is out, a couple of hours to strip it down, replace the seals and reassemble. It's probably cheaper to repair your existing trans than to replace the whole thing.

The auto from a 98 Forester is not a direct replacement....Unless it has a spin off filter like the 99 Legacy and the plugs are the same. The auto 98 Forester I owned had the older type without a spin off filter.

Just to let you guys know the '99 Lgt limited is for sale, two owners, body is straight and clean minus a few scratches, no rust, mechanically sound but could probably use a basic tune-up, bone stock, interior sunroof cover thing is caught in the sunroof tracks so it closes with the sunroof, power antenna is broken, drives fine once it goes in gear, and has a gold WCSS sticker opposite of the awd badge in the back. The reason I'm posting about it here is I don't have enough posts to make a for sale thread and I don't want to spam the site to get my post count up and its not my car.
