BD - Rear quarter panel - Wheel Arch gasket - NEED IT?

Basically I'm wondering if people have pulled these 'gaskets' out of the rear quarter panel wheel arch on either side of their car. What are they for? Do they cause rust to start building up in those areas, or prevent it? Just wondering.

Just wondering if pulling them out now would cause the car to get rust faster, or slower, or if I should just replace them with some new ones as mine are worn. Thanks!

they cause rust. every honda you see on the road that has a rusty quarter panel is because of strips just like that.

Remove it, it collects dirt dust and salt, and then it collects water and causes rust.

Same with the plastic cover over the fuel filler pipe. Remove that too.

So why exactly DID they put them on the car if that just happens? And i know all too well about the fuel filler pipe.. mine already went and I replaced it with a new one. Still need to pull the plastic off the new one.. just forget the easiest way to get to it!

Guess i'll pull them off then because I don't really want any rust and crap starting in that are!

i just repaired the rust on the quarter panels, i pulling those off when i go outside ...

my guess would be to prevent rust lol. little did they know....

Its to stop tires and people's hands from being shredded by the possibly sharp fender metal under it when they change a tire or have overloaded suspension. That's it. The likelihood of that happening is so slim it's not worth it.

I started to pull mine off the other day cause about an inch of it had already pealed on its own, but as i started to I noticed underneath didnt look the best, so I put it back on. Little did I know its better to take it off

As much as you guys say they cause "rust", not having them there causes rust too. They protect the inner fender lip from rocks thrown by the wheels which can cause chipping and then rust. I say keep them there but take them off and clean them out often

Oh and it might be a good idea to throw some grease in them as well on the rear by the bumper to prevent the rust

I've removed mine before and they were GLUED on. I didn't feel good about gluing things to my car so I left them off.

What type of glue WOULD you use to re-glue them? I'm debating just picking up some new ones and putting em back in place. Probably DONT need them, but yeah, around here rocks love to mess up paint!

I wouldn't glue them. They're just supposed to press on. Plus you want to be able to take them off to clean them out

The original question is "is it NEEDED" (thread title) - the answer is NO. The car is safe to drive without it.

And digi - if you want to have the gasket replacement, I'm betting you could just get some nice thick 1.5mil vinyl to wrap around the edge. Find a signmaking/decal shop (fast signs for example) and get some of their excess material.

Mine have been gone on both my cars for a long time. They trap moisture, which leads to rust. You can easily paint rustoleum over any spot rust that may form under the fender lip from rocks that hit the paint. You cannot repair fenderwell rust as easily. I say remove them.
