i'm assuming there is some kind of control unit for the heated seats from the bg outbacks. anybody know the location of this unit? i'd like to grab it next time i'm at the junkyard. 8)

I think its supposed to be on the center console next to the e-brake.

that's where the switches are... but the harness runs to some kind of control box i'd assume... i'm looking for the location of the control box

Chances are its just a relay or some sort. Theres nothing to 'control' in the heated seats. Under the seat or part of the heater wiring?

where I've seen a lot of the relays is on the inside of that panel located underneath the steering wheel. Might want to check there for something that says," seat heater" or "heated seats"

i'm assuming then that the harness runs into a fusebox/relay/etc...
i figured there might be something to keep the seats from getting too hot... maybe i'm wrong though. hence why i thought there might be a control box...

Check up under the gauges... well, in that area anyway. Near the fuse box below the steering wheel is where I would look first. Other than that, check the fuse box in the engine bay and see if the cover says anything about the seats on the relay layout.
Good luck

A fuse. Too hot = too many amps = blown fuse

I think he means more like a Thermostat.

I doubt theres anythign like that. Too complicated for such a simple system. Theyre designed to use 12V and whatever amount of amps. Amps shouldnt go up unless theres a short in the system and in that case the fuse will blow.
Mind you, I dont know this for sure, im just saying how its probably the simplest solution to the problem.

According to the wiring diagram on Page 104 of the pdf document available on sha_zapple's site:
http://www.nbautotuners.com/images/Legacywiring.pdf
it looks like there is simply a relay (probably turned on when the car is running) and the switches. No controller. It would appear as though it's the switch that takes care of turning on 4 elements or just 2 depending on if you select Hi or Lo. There is also a 20A fuse in series from the power supply. Probably the heaters in the seats stay on as long as the switch is on and the key is on.
You would need to find where these wires come from (go to) and then find out if your wiring harness already has provision for it. Most likely you will find that there is an deadend plug somewhere on your car already where the wiring from the the seats plugs into. How far back you have to go I have no idea.

I'd imagine your butt would get uncomfortable before the heater coils would get too hot  There's your temperature sensor :D

well... i'm probably gonna pull the carpet out of the junkyard outback anyways (as mine is pretty shot) so hopefully i'll be able to trace the harness back and find what i need to make this work 8)

actually just the wiring harness and the relays... already have the switch and the seats with the heating elements... i'll probably be picking up the harness and the relay tomorrow from the junkyard.

how did this end up? I just got the 2 switches as well and would like to know how this turned out. The seat have a plug and the switches have a plug. But I need everything in between, I make what I need to(luv StaKons) but what fuse do I tap off to create the power?

(bumping an old thread)
did you ever get this stuff wired up? I'm about to start the same project (see my thread in the Interiors forum) except my seats are out of a WRX.
