He types of the torque bind issue on newer models, but doesn't elaborate on the solenoid issue (same symptoms)
Anyone specifically know what/which solenoid it is? I'm experiencing this on my '94 L Wagon
Couldn't get a reply when I e-mailed him...

The bushings and seals wear the aluminum down after time. This allows the pressurized ATF to leak from one chamber to the next. The torque meant to be transferred to the rear ends up being greatly reduced and the fluid transaction causes the shuddering.

it just says to replace the whole rear half of the trans lol.

... the solenoid wears down the aluminum??
I was under the assumption that the older Legacys he was referring to had a solenoid issue, not the aluminum/steel issue?

the solenoid that causes torque bind is "Duty C" if it has been binding too long it may also need the MPT clutch pack replaced.

the torque bind comes from the duty C solenoid not actuating the transfer valve. the way it works is if the solenoid is not doing anything the MPT clutch gets full pressure and is "locked". the Solenoid acts on a valve relieving pressure on the clutch pack.

So what does replacing said solenoid entail?

Before you tear open the trans, read threads in the trans section that ive posted in. You may save yourself some grief. ;)
