Subaru JUSTY...

Ive seen several if these pop up around the area on craigslist...does anyone know much about them?...one for sale said it was REAR wheel drive only, then another was AWD and needs the bottom end rebuilt

So I can purchase for less than 500 bucks..is there much to do for swaps? Im thinkg Through in a diffrent engine or something and beat the tar out of it... What do you all think

As far as I know, non of the other subaru stuff is easily swapped into these, but anything can happen with a welder :)

There wasn't a rwd Justy made, only fwd and 4wd. Maybe the one on craigslist you saw is a 4wd that the front drive isn't working? These cars are transverse mounted so ej motors are do-able but more work than the usual Subaru disconnect and reconnect lego. I had a fwd Justy back in high school and it did ok in light snow and ice compared to other fwd cars, great mpg 35-45 all the time. In 91 and early 92 they had made the car in either fuel injected or carburetor, watch out for carb cars, the carbs work good, just so damn many vacuum lines all over the damn place. For more power drop in a four cylinder (Justy is a three cylinder) 1.3liter from a Festiva or Mazda (both made by Mazda, and handled small turbos relatively well), not sure which trans work though.

Stickers are almost a must when you drive a Justy, so no one thinks you are serious, lol.

It seems that it won't be worth it for the amount of time id need after looking into things...it would be cool as hell to see one built as a sleeper though....

From what I've read, it's a Suzuki Swift with almost no Subaru parts at all...

^ any of the ones we got in the states 87-94 were built by subaru... They just didn't share the same parts bin that much...

We had one of the these a while ago (my oldest sister's first car, and then driven by my dad). Ours was just FWD, but my dad still says to this day that it was the best car he's ever driven in the snow. They're pretty neat little cars, but you can't do any EJ swap stuff to them without massive fab work if that's what you're curious about. To be honest, they're better off left alone as what they were meant to be in the first place: a system beating, commuting machine.

Light cars with tiny tires tend to do well in the snow (not massive SUVs with huge tires like the popular thought seems to be)

Odd factoid: The Justy was the last mass produced car to be sold in the US with a carburetor. They had carbs until like 91 or 92 I think.

i herd with the justys if you want to get one get it with fuel injection and the CVT, because the other ones do not tend to hold up as well. dont quote me on that, i remember hearing that somewhere. and yes subaru had a CVT in the 4wd justys

Usdm Just's did not have cvt. As far as reliability I had a carb and it held up very well untill I let a friend borrow it, drove about 500 mile trip and last 50 miles the clutch started slipping (linkage needed to be adjusted) anyways he kept going and was cruising about 35 mph pretty much redlined in 4th gear for quite a few miles and toasted the the head.

according to the dustysjustys website in 1990 they introduced a ECVT transmission, i have personally seen a cvt justy in person. it says cvt 4wd on the side of the ones i have seen here in oregon. i would take what wikipedia says with a grain of salt because people can go in a change things.
