Hi, Im Jake and this is the lifetime and story of my 97 outback.
Well, i guess I have to start with my first car. A 99 taurus wagon. biggest POS ever. Left me stranded a few times and just all around sucked. went forever though. it had 220k when i sold it, and it was still going. this car basically drove me insane with how shitty it was, so i decided i needed a new car. At the time, one of my friends had a 97 lgt, and i loved it, so i decided to step into the subaru game. Thats when i found my car. A 97 outback with 135k, slipping clutch, and rust galore. for some strange reason, i just had to have it. Little did i know what it would turn out to be one day.
I kick myself now for not making a member's journal so i could track my progress along the way, but I didnt. here are some pics of progress along the way:

Holy crap awesome!!! An outback with a JDM front end conversion painted to match! I don't think I've seen that before.
Love the front emblem, snowflake rims, and mud flaps too! pictures are well done too  (I wish MY emblem wouldn't have shattered in half while I was trying to clear it...)
What's it lowered on?

Wow looks amazing, and I dont think Ive ever seen that bumper on an outback. Looks freaking awesome! Dont forget to post up a mod list before your thread gets locked!

I'm not really a fan of the older wagons, but once in a while one comes along that sparks my interest. This is one of them.

Looks great! Love the front end. JDM L7 tall grill + side marker lights will make it even better. Probably my favorite green BG on here. Great mods!

Give me your front bumper, now!
Did you get the bumper painted somewhere? Or was it a DIY job?

How did you get that height? Was it something simple or more complex? Thats about the height I want on my car.

^^ Outbacks came stock like that.
97scoob
12-15-2010, 03:50 PM
yeah, that pic was stock height.
And funny story about that jdm bumper, it was smashed pretty good when i got it, and i wasn't going to buy it, but i did because i ended up paying 150 for the beam, fogs, fog mounts, and the skin. I welded the bumper back together with a shitty soldering iron and used some super strong epoxy that I found to keep it together, and then painted it with paint from paintscratch.com if i remember correctly. It was just color matched paint in a spray can, but i think it came out pretty good seeing where it was destroyed when i got it...
and peugoby, i was thinking about getting an L7 grill, but i kinda like the mix with the usdm gt grill and the rest jdm. im still kind of on the fence. i definitely want sidemarkers though, and they are pretty cheap, but i honestly just keep forgetting to buy them haha

Looks really good - enough to make me do a double take and wonder what's up with that outback.
Considered losing the pinstripe above the wheel arch though? I think the OBs look great without it.
97scoob
12-15-2010, 04:18 PM
i was going to get rid of the pinstripe from the whole car, but one of the fenders got replaced at one point, and whoever repainted it cleared the sticker in, so it would pretty much be a PITA to get rid of

Sick man! I've been on this site for less than a month, and everyday I get on here I want a wagon more and more. I don't think I can get rid of my newly acquired sedan, so I think my next ride will be a wagon. I'd love to have that front end.

i have been kinda slacking lately with the updates but i have been really busy with college/work. The only real significant mods i have done lately are msd coil pack, and diy honda rear wiper upgrade. oh yeah, and my favorite, gt side skirts  i have a few pics from after the install of the skirts, and just a few randoms from when i got my new camera. I know that these are just driveway pictures but i haven't had time to do a real shoot so bare with me aha

man i love it! Easily becoming one of my favorite subies on here.
I love how it looks lowered, sometimes makes me wish mine was lowered like this again...
Anyways, I'm also a college student on a time constraint and budget, i know how that goes. Just got done with all my finals and it's time to start modding!!
How do you like the msd mod? I could really feel the power increase on that.
You planning on painting the side skirts the tanish color?

Thank you for the compliments. I Just finished all my finals yesterday too so now i finally have time to get something accomplished aha
As for the MSD, I didn't really feel that much of a difference. I guess I can feel it a little more low end. I mean i can definitely tell it idles better, and my exhaust sounds a little different like others, but idk
And on the side skirts, i was going to leave them black, and paint the lip on the jdm bumper black, and maybe the rear bumper lip too but I just haven't had time. i think it would look kinda goofy with the skirts tan but other trim black.
On a totally separate note, now that its summer and I will actually be able to make some money, i am thinking about building a Turbo motor, something like imprezagc8's setup seeing where i can get most of the motor parts for free. I'm kind of torn though because i need this car as a dd, and i cant really have the down time seeing where i will be working 6-7 days a week every week this summer. I guess i have a lot of thinking ahead of me before i do anything...

absolutely love it. you should check out my 98. after putting on the jdm taillights i didn't like the gold legacy badge so i got a new chrome subaru one to replace it. lot's of inspiration on what i want to do with mine! time to start stacking some bills.
how was the install on the side skirts? i always wondered if they would work on the outbacks.

That combo of parts makes the outback look BAD ASS and yet slick at the same time.

looking to get some opinions...
thinking about maybe selling and getting a new car but not really sure what to ask for a price, and not sure if it would be better just to part it out? but i would rather not do that. what do you guys think its worth?
its got almost 180k and the only thing i would take out is the head unit and sub+amp so it would have just the stock head unit
