I'm wanting a fun sleeper legacy, so I've been debating putting a ej257 or ej20tt in place of the ej25. I've looked at a lot of posts and haven't really been able to grasp what is necessary to do this kinda swap. I was hoping someone could check out this ej257 link and tell me what else wouldbe necessary to do this swap:

I'm new to the tuning world and am not the most mechanical person in the land, I jsut love subies and want to make something fun.

Thanks a lot everyone....

An EJ series motor will work. However, finding an EJ20G will be semi-difficult as you'll have to find someone who imported one. It may also be a trick to do the wiring, but it is possible. People put 20's and 257's in BC's all the time.

EJ20tt will not work with left hand drive, and RHD, I discovered, is not worth the trouble.

That STi engine will work, but at 3k with the reserve not met, I doubt youll be able to pick it up cheaply. That right there comes with everything you would need to do the swap (other than little stuff you can get easy), except a turbo crossmember. I dont remember which ones work, but that guy says he has the car so you could see if he would send you that too. You could use your stock 5mt but youll break it in short order, just go ahead and swap the trans, diff (if you swap the trans youll have to swap the diff most likely) and axles. 6mt FTW.

I just bought a Version 3 STi front clip for 3k, with the EJ20G, full harness, RA trans, rear diff, axles, etc. Convenient, plus its fun to get half an STi in a box. However, any EJ series motor (minus the twin turbo, and technically it does fit but it wont clear a left hand drive steering rack) will fit into your legacy and will bolt up to any EJ series trans.

The trick to all this is wiring. Subarus, unlike 240sxs and the like, have one HUGE harness for the whole car as opposed to an engine harness and a car harness. Therefore, you can count on 40+ hours of wiring spent splicing harnesses, reading wiring pinouts, and bashing your head against the pavement. Have a shop do it unless you are a guru, thats what i'm doing.

It is definitely a cool project, but you have to be willing to spend the dollars and time. Let me or gatorgt know if you have any more questions, he knows more about it than I do (I'm engine swapping my GC8).

Good luck!
