Thanks Navi and Superu. I always wanted to mimic your off roader when I first joined the forum. Maybe one day the lego will be lifted on outback suspension!!

thanks, or gen 2 forester bits (better/higher than just OB ;)

nice ride you've got there man, I've pondered the headers bit, still sometimes think about it. What are your impressions??

Is yours a manual or auto?

Sadly, it's an automatic. I do have plans to swap in a 5 spd over the summer, unless I change my mind. As for the UEL headers, I'm in love with my car all over again! It sounds just like any boosted boxer would sound, and everyone seems to like the sound of it.

:smt002 FWIW, an auto would be better for off road. . . .serious off road

BUUUt, that's not your current application, so I digress. .

Shane- the 4EAT is in a 50/50 power split in all gears except 4th, then its 90/10 I believe.

eeeehhhhhh ("error".wav file)
4EAT is 90/10 by default until there's slip. 5MT (in NA cars) is 50/50 by default until there's slip. :smt027

You want 50/50... 90 going to the front wheels and 10 to the rears.
There is a lockout mod you can do to wire in a switch to do a 50/50 whenever you want with the auto.

Thanks Shane! I will look into this tonight. I just got my passenger side headlight, and I have a slight problem. The driver's side has be altered to where the orange turn signal lens is out and the tab to where the turn signal locks in is gone. I can either repeat the same procedure on the passenger side headlight, or I can install another lens so they both look orange.

What do those numbers mean? Sorry I'm not familiar with transmission figures. Is it good to have 50/50 or a 90/10?

we're talking % of drivetrain power going to the front wheels and rear wheels

5MT (5 speed manual transmission) has 50% to the front and 50% to the rear always until it slips
4EAT (4 speed electronic automatic transmission) has 90% to the front and 10% to the rear, until things slip.

These transmissions have completely different center differential arrangements. In a 4x4 the front-rear spread is in the transfer case and it locked front rear split, in an AWD (specifically a subaru 5MT) it is the center differential which is a viscous coupling. It works pretty much like a rear VLSD differential, but sending power front rear instead of left right.

check this one out for a good differential explanation. bear in mind this is an open differential they're explaining. LSDs and lockers get complicated but basically lock up when there's different resistance, thus both wheels turn at the same rate (similar to the binding they show around 2:54 in this video)

careful on the 4x4 mod. It's a good one but you can't use it all the time, or too much at a time. It overheats the fluid. Maybe an additional tranny radiator could help, but otherwise it's a pretty sweet mod!!

Thanks for the lesson. If I can find a 5 spd for sale after I graduate college, (and if I get my project car) I'll park the legacy so I can swap transmissions.

After a few texts and the exchange of money, I got another driver side headlight! It needs some tab repair, but it's a lot better than my other headlight. Also started to label the wires so it's a lot simpler to wire into my stock wiring harness. Here's some pictures!

If you can find one, I think that the SUS rear bumper cover would look really good in your body color. And compliment the front end nicely.

Hard to find a low angle of one, but it hangs down pretty low compared to stock, or stock+the lip.

and here is the big surprise (that Chris runied). I found a trans from a 99 Impreza OBS, and got a sweet deal for that, the matching rear diff, manual starter, alternator, brand new clutch and new flywheel for $100. I'd say I make some awesome deals. Hope to collect more parts and hopefully swap this out in the summer.

Awesomeness!!

Is that a 3.90 5MT? you'd LOVE a 4.11 if you can get one... BUT all that for $100 is worth getting into a manual, even at 3.90. Besides your generation 5MT would be 3.90 anyway (mine was). AND with stockish size/diameter tires, 3.90 will be great.

BTW, I keep wondering, what's the SUS part of this LS/SUS thread title??

Thanks man. All I know is that this is off of a 99 OBS, so I'm not 100% sure what gear ratio it is. The SUS part is just because my car now looks like one with the Outback/GT Bumper and hood, but its a single color instead of the two tone.

For $50, it doesn't really matter if the tranny lasts you forever. It would be great, but it's not like you wasted a few hundred bucks on a crappy transmission that'll fail on you within a year.

Sweet,

Pretty sure it's 3.90. (http://www.gearhack.com/myink/ViewPage.php?file=docs/Subaru%20Transmission%20Chart)
My 95 L's 5 speed was 3.90, so like I said with 24" tires (stocker diameter) you'll be fine. It'll be good on gas and lower revs on the highway.

I put in a 4.11 Outback transmission and it compensated for my 27" tires, so now my speedo and odo are more accurate than when I had the 3.90 transmission with the tall tires.

Anyrate, I paid $330 for JUST the 5 speed and read diff and thought that was a pretty good deal (also a 99, but a legacy outbaco)... So again, sweet deal you got there!!

xoSubieLegacyxo

I was in the same boat, till I did it.
It's still really just taking off a bunch of bolts, taking out a big box, putting in a big box, and putting on a bunch of bolts, once you stop thinking about the fact that it's a transmission and without it the car is a huge doorstop. And that midway you thing, "AAARGG is this car ever going to run again?!!"
but yeah it's kind of straight forward, granted he'll have a little more b'c of going auto to stick, adding pedals, and clutch stuff, but that aside, it's still just bolts and a box...

The cable clutch setup is just one cable from the pedal to the clutch fork, and our automatic cars have the hole pre-drilled under the brake booster to slip it through the firewall. (Gigitty). I'm thinking a white with a thin red lip to accent the color on the car. I have a lot of touch up paint leftover from my hood and bumper.

That wouldn't be bad. Technically you could do more then the lip. Spokes and center hub in white. Everything else in red.

I would do plasti-dip, but I'm not 100% sure how that works.

What about 3 tone? white for the center and spokes, red for the outter lip, and black/drak gray for the inner lip? Or another compilentary color. Just a thought.

I've been looking for seats since I've joined the forums. I could of had front and rear STi seats for $450 back when I was in high school. I did find a few other offers within the past month, but unfortunately I have some debt to pay. So these are within my budget, and they look better than my faded, stained, and boring stock seats. Hopefully I can pick them up this weekend.

Awesome car man, you should definitely take some updated pics. I got a '97 Red LSi at the beginning of the year and have been slowly modding it. I should be painting the GT hood and outback bumper I just installed in a week or so. Our cars will look pretty similar. Saw you posted about a front lip for our bumpers, I have sideskirts and a rear lip but don't really like the way the sideskirts look with the outback front bumper. Wanted to ask if you got the stock OBfogs or aftermarket ones and if the rally armour mudflaps were an easy install. I just put HID's in my JDM projectors and have been having issues with the wiring, had to get a new harness for them but now there flickering again but i'll hopefully solve that soon. I should probably start a build thread soon, you inspired me

That's awesome man, I'll have a clone! I have stock outback foglights that I got from the person I bought the bumper from. But a good upgrade would be a set of Hella 500FF auxiliary lights. RA mudflaps are easy to install. I made a cardboard template and marked where I wanted the holes to be located. I want to install HIDS in my jdm projector headlights, but never got around to it. I'm glad that I'm inspiring a new member, and if your car will be anywhere close to mine, then you'll enjoy every corner and snow storm you encounter.

Yea I was going through the threads on here and stumbled across your build and was like...wait is this my car?
haha yea I was leaning towards getting the Hella 500ff's cuz the stock ones are going to basically be just as much.. the only thing is that Cali makes you put the rockcovers on any aftermarket lights, although I could probably get away with it since it would look stock. Would they be to bright to use when driving freeways n such?
What kinda RA mudflaps did you get? the '93-'01 Impreza's?

I think you should be ok if you wire them in as foglights. They do get hot so I wouldn't run them constantly for long journeys. I got the universal mud flaps (I think they were $15) and just made a cardboard template for the holes. Also got some hardware screws and clips from the local hardware store. I had to tear apart the old mud flaps because the metal screw and clip got stuck together and wouldn't loosen.

stripped 2 lug studs, and snapped a third one. Replaced a 5 on one side, and used my stock lugs. Also put my stock headlights back in.

Well it's come down to this. I'm trading the Legacy in for a 2004 WRX at my step dads dealership. I can't take any more break downs when I need a reliable car. So on Saturday I'll be handing over the keys. It's been a fun 5 years with the old girl.

This will only be allowed if you make a MR2 thread for the WRX.

Last picture ever taken of her at the dealership. She will be missed, but someone else will hopefully have the same pleasure as I did. Here's to a great vehicle platform. Cheers!

This is soooo sad. I was hoping to see your car in person eventually. I am out Hanover way three to four times a week for work...

Yeah she was letting go. The rack and pinion is broken at the dealership I traded it to. What do you drive? I might of already seen you, or have seen my new car (04 WRB WRX).

haha I still miss the old lego. I think my plan is to get my Datsun running again, and then find me a RHD postal wagon (along with something to go along with it)!
