I have owned this car for almost a year and a half now. Just recently within the past 5-6 months I have learned a lot and it gave me a direction to go. Lets start off by saying I love this car but at the same time I hate it. It’s a love hate thing. Think it’s that way with all cars.
I bought it FULLY stock 143k on the clock and a Reconstructed title it was hit in the back end just a little bit got most of it straightened out now. Got it for $1900.
It has been an experiment. I have done things and then changed them to something else. So some things may not look the same later. Any questions just ask.

Cool you are better off looking dual exhaust port heads before a single port header. Good luck
Baddog

I have the option to buy some DOHC heads. Just not really sure how to swap them over. Things like that.
Reason
11-16-2010, 03:24 PM
Don't do it, if your car has slid which it does stick with sohc heads. No wiring needed just a head swap.
StatGSR
11-16-2010, 03:28 PM
yea, sadly the DOHCs don't really up any doors that particularly useful. i would move a couch in front of said door actually...

So I need to find SOHC Dual Ports?
What years had those?
Sorry I am COMPLETELY clueless about this part of the motor.

^ 90-95 legacys and similar yeared imprezas will have dual port SOHC 2.2 heads.
obviously swaping heads is quite a bit of extra work and possibly more money, just to get a header and sound that you want, that's why i would recommend finding a good exhaust shop and see what kind of quote they will give you to build one. Many people have made them before.

You are a life saver. I am going to keep an eye on that!
Also I have called 3 exhaust shops local to me. One including Rallitek who said they cannot make me single ports.
An exhaust shop quoted me 1200 for headers....Not really sure wtf they were thinking
And another exhaust shop named "darrels mufflers" said they can't do them either.

how did you attach it? because if you used spray glue i think you can pull and stretch the suede to fit without folding. here is what i mean. this guy did it on his pillars, which the geometry is far more complicated. http://www.iwsti.com/forums/how-install ... llars.html (http://www.iwsti.com/forums/how-install/191071-wrap-trim-panels-suede-b-c-pillars.html)

Yea I saw Supers was making them again, seems like they've been along time coming. I'm in the process of making my own, I'm taking pictures in hopes of making a DIY for single ports on here. Everything is going together good so far. Maybe it will inspire people a little more to try their hand at fabbing up some

Did you have to pound away the tire well to get the bar to fit?
Baddog
08-27-2011, 05:12 PM
The bar was made for the Legacy. They stopped making them again.
I got one of the last 4 they had. It came with "solid" endlinks. I don't know if I can call them solid but they are made out of metal and not rubber/plastic.
Too bad my car wasn't up more. Right at my rear left quarter panel is Doug Vincents house.

Did you have to roll the rear fenders or anything to fit the aftermarket wheels after you lowered your car?

Grimmspeed Master Cylinder Brace will be picked up from Cobb Tuning Thursday.
Once the weather picks up I will be dying the carpet black. Getting a window tint, 30-35%.
Ordering some interior pieces such a an E-brake boot, Shifter boot (for when the 5 speed gets done) and armrest cover. Those will be ordering from the guy on RS25. Can't recall the name off the top of my head.

Tried to install the MC Brace from Grimmspeed today. And as usual with their parts I run into problems. Will not be buying their pulley anymore, money will go to another company.
One of the hard lines from the brake reservoir is pressed RIGHT up against the strut tower. Which doesnt allow the MC Brace to sit flush like it is supposed to.
I tried to squeeze it behind the line but there is no room what so ever.

Just get another door, and repaint it to match. A good body shop will be able to match your paint. Even if you find a junkyard donor, that paint won't match because it's aged differently.

I see what you mean. I don't keep track, lol.
However I am one of those people that looks at the cost of something and if I can do something better to increase drive-ability I will. $500 isn't including the cost of the door ~$50ish. Than the door would look the best and out of place. All my doors have dings. My fenders have dings. My trunk is scratched to hell. Bumper needs replaced with one that isn't cracked and painted. Honestly the whole car needs painted. However to pay a shop to do such a thing would be spendy. I also do not have the slightest experience in doing it my self and would need A LOT of body filler.
I was planning on just getting a door of any color and plastidipping the whole car. And then if/when I can afford it or learn to do it my self (properly) I can just peel the plastidip off.
I have come to terms at this point that the car will never be pretty.

So I tried to use the 96 2.5 Headbolts today when I put the motor together. Found out the 2.5 headbolts are shorter than the 2.2 head bolts. Have to helicoil 2 threads in the block now.
I've done 4 head gasket jobs before. And this was news to me. Pulled the threads right out of the block.
Reason
09-19-2012, 07:42 AM
I should have said something but I assumed you knew all ready. Because the EJ25 bolts sit inside the heads they are shorter. You damaged the threads?
Baddog
09-19-2012, 01:57 PM

Baddog
09-19-2012, 11:57 PM
Well. The block is toast. Helicoil skipped a thread. It caught onto the bolt during installation. And wouldn't let go. Bolt is now broken inside the block with a helicoil. Stainless steel helicoil and steel bolt? Not coming out. So this is on hold.
Going to find each and everyone frakenmotor thread and make sure to note that 2.5 head bolts do not work with these motor builds.

96 EJ25D Block (with flat top pistons for higher compression than the 97-98 blocks). 92 Dualport 2.2 heads. Delta 220 Cams. And the usual stuff everyone else has. Exhaust. Hybrid intake. Blah blah. Who cares.
Anyways. Car is a lot more fun to drive. Has freeway go power. The sound of the engine is orgasmic and has a GOOD subaru rumble. The 2.2 just doesn't make as good of a sound.
Over all the motor is a very streetable and is just the right amount of power to get your self in trouble while having plenty of fun.

I hate to say it but I think you're right about your ECU not being able to properly deal. Not only is your compression sky high, your cam profile is slightly more radical. What about a piggy back unit like a Perfect Power? Do you have anything in mind?
Also could be your stock ECU running too advanced timing in some conditions. Maybe look into retarding the base timing slightly

I should be more clear. The community around my area has turned around. It's all about turbo this, turbo that. Hell all my work has been done by my self. No one else. Have a front LSD which is different (Half the kids don't even know what that is). And a frankenmotor I built that is still running just fine.
No matter the work done. The community in my area doesn't care. So I don't go to meets anymore. I love to talk cars. However it is now so uninviting I want a new community. It's all turbo.
Still deciding. Always loved what a 4g63t could do. So maybe an early Talon/Eclipse AWD. I want AWD or RWD. No FWD for me (unless I could somehow afford a new focus ST).
I have had this car for over 4 years now and I loved it through and through. Just the community has fallen flat and is no longer enjoyable. And I am looking for something with a better power plant. Nothing looks as good as a Legacy to me though. Heh

So for the future for those that are looking at this build. Yes it's a fun little dose of power but there are way too many other 4 bangers out there that will pull harder. One thing I loved after taking it to the drag strip was how quick it hooked up off the line.
Had my fun times but I am so far into it now that I just can't proceed any further just to do a turbo build.

Baddog, didn't you use a 96 block for the high compression build? 96 blocks have those crazy looking pistons that I know were the culprit of the detonation events. A 97-99 block might have been a little nicer to you but you went pretty damn far with that 96 block! Was it giving you crap on 93 octane?
Yeah I used a 96 block and pistons. I used 92 octane and it was okay. Didn't have any major detonation issues.

My money is still on burned valves.
240psi is pro probably closer to 11.5:1
I am starting to agree. Today I drove it to the store (my only transportation at the moment).
Backfires like crazy.

The reason i say its a valve is you dont have any noise. And in order for a ringland to go that low the piston would have to have a big hole in it (which is possible) but that isially breaks the piston and it makes noise.
Then you would also have a ton of blow by.... Like blow the dipstick out..
Since you havent mentioned those symptoms.. Im going to say you have a burned valve. Which isnt terribly uncommon with subarus. It doesnt mean your car is shitty or anything alot of things can cause it. One of the most comon is tune another is valve lash too tight.

Yeah motor doesn't sound any different. Just sounds like its missing. Which is it. Flashing check engine light the 10 miles I drove it back home to park it.
No slapping noise that I can hear at all or anything of that nature.

Actually I take that back. Just got back inside. Air coming out of the oil dipstick and smoke coming out of the oil filler.

Blowby.
Seems like it's getting worse the more you drive it.
Do you think the block is still salvageable at this point?

like i said. some blowby is absolutely normal, but for you to loose 234psi of compression you would blow the dipstick out of the tube.
you would also get alot of smoke from the exhaust.
YOU NEED TO DO A LEAK DOWN TEST TO KNOW FOR SURE.

Took the motor out tonight. Cylinder walls look fine. Haven't removed the piston yet. Will see tomorrow night when I remove the piston.
But for now nothing looks wrong. Valves open and close and fully seal (rebuilt 10k miles ago). Mostly expecting to see a ringland failure.

Ringland in #4. Cylinder walls were just fine. Put 97-98 Pistons in and new piston rings. New headgaskets and the likes.
I am running 2 step colder plugs (from the ~12:1 motor?).
Motor runs rough at idle and under load now. Can't quite figure it out. No check engine lights. I pull the plug wire off the coil pack and the motor dies right away. Doesnt even try to run on the other cylinders.
If I pull the wire off the plug side the motor doesn't really run much different in any cylinder that I pull it in.
Bad timing? Bad coil pack? Too cold of plugs?
Running an MSD coilpack.

Perserverance and determination are the hallmarks of any owner of a car with mods. Even more so with an N/A Subaru. Keep the faith dude. And if you go for a DSM, let me know. I owned 5 of them, including a 400+ WHP GVR4. Great cars with glass trannies.

Got the car running again last night. Bad ring placement or seat. Not sure really. But replaced the piston and threw new rings on it. No longer smokes.

Don't really update this anymore because...Well I just don't.
But the 25D in my car is quite toast. Cylinder walls are too far gone from the blown ringland and I am blowing smoke again and getting low compression.
Decided it's time to step up to a 251 short block. Got the block for 100 with a bad rod bearing. Going to clean it up and throw ACL race bearings in and new rings. New 10mm oil pump. Sti Oil pan, pick up, and windage tray.
Hopefully this will be the last time I rebuild a motor for this car.
Oh and a recent pic I took.

That 251 is going to be tougher for sure. The 96 blocks are just not cut for that kind of treatment. Are you going to open the ports to those 22E heads a little?

Depending on cost yeah I may have the heads opened up some. Not sure how much benefit there is

Copy cat... hahahaha JK.
Good luck.
Mine is up and running except for a phantom oil leak at the rear of the motor but not anywhere on the "back" of the motor like the RMS or oil separator plate.
The high compression with the 1000 cams sure does make the motor noisy though. Maybe that is just the exhaust though. I stripped one of the header studs out of the head when I was re-installing the headers last night so the drivers side is only being held by one stud/nut.

Mine was real noisy, I wrapped the header and its pretty quiet now, considering...

The payoff is worth every penny. Much more power in the midrange & more power to be had all throughout the rpm. The powerband will stretch higher into the rpms as well, so a little more top end.

Don't update this at all because the MR threads have gone down hill.
However I am now runnin' a 251 with 25D heads and STI HG's. One of my more favorable builds so far.

Really!?! Do tell. What's the compression ratio on that? I've always preferred dual cam Subaru engines to single cams.
chevyman1968
05-26-2014, 01:59 PM
that compression ratio should 10 to 1 but I am not sure I am running the same set up but with the stock Rs head gaskets so mines around 11.1 to 1.
also, when you hit 3k with this set up if feels like vtec kicks in. i was getting good mpgs as well.
Baddog
05-26-2014, 02:57 PM
It's about 10.7:1. Stock compression is 10.1 on a 251. This is a 251 with 25D heads and a THIN STI HG.
I didn't notice any low end torque drop from my old 25D/22E cammed motor. I also did intake spacers, throttle body spacer (home made) and some other stuff to the motor. As well as an EL header.

Was looking back at this. Not much has really changed at all. Going to be doing a turbo swap into the girls 95 Impreza soon. I have been spending all my car time helping Oc7ane get the turbo build finish. Which is now complete.
The EJ251/25D is running good. Some blue smoke when I get on it. But the heads had around 220k on them without a rebuild. Currently just drive it.

I am running the STi gaskets now on my build. I really miss the high compression but I was looking at having to change the head gaskets once a year. The compression blew out the stock RS HGs in 6 months, but I can run regular fuel now which I am happy about. I was spending 360-400 bucks a month on the old setup.

Well tonight the Legacy caught fire on the back passenger side near the header. I am unsure of what caused it. But after years of faithful service, she is now gone.

Not sure the plans I have yet. But after having a boosted Impreza. This will get boost someday.
