I need help in buying a new HG and Waterpump. Any good brands out there other than the ones from a dealer?

I would buy OEM head gaskets, they arnt that much really... As for a water pump, just make sure you get a NEW one, not a re-man....

If you are replacing the water pump and hg you should also do the thermostat. Should certainly do the timing belt if it's anywhere near the scheduled replacement cycle.

I would agree... It eliminates that much more work down the road...

i bought a whole gasket set from advanced auto parts. Felpro makes the kit, came with everything, even some extra stuff. while ur in there, i highly recomment doing the valve gasket and spark plug hole gaskets. (all included in the felpro kit). also if u have the tools, the kit also comes with valve seals
i also recommend, (although i didnt know about this till after i finished :smt013 ), the oil pump gasket which is also included in the kit should be replaced.
some other major seals the kit comes with are feul injector seals, intake manifold, exhaust head gaskets, whole bunch
check all your coolant hoses, spark plugs, air filter the basics.
also, idk how many others do this, but once i did changed the gaskets and had everything back together, i ran the motor on some fresh oil for about 20 min, shut it off, drained it and re-filled it with some fresh oil, just to make sure i filtered any foreign contaminants that might have gotten in there
i know there are some other basic things i may have forgotten, if i remember ill post em up.
i just did this on my car last weekend. took me and a friend two days, one for de-assembly and one for re-assembly
i pulled my motor for this job.
what year car do you have?

oh, and check ur timing belt tensioner, it should be good.
something of importance tho, when u remove it and compress the pison so you can put a pin in it, go reallly reallllly slow, a decent sized table vice should be fine. and i just stuck an alan key in the hole to hold the piston down.
and heres my little build thread

Thank you Jewbaru for all the notes.
My car is a Legacy 97 2.5 GT 135T plus of mileage. I didn't pull my engine out. kinda hard and i'm a noob...
I already got the heads resurfaced. I open this topic because i bought a cheap HG kit on ebay only to find out here in other topics that it doesn't last long. The brand is Evergreen automotive and it is exactly the same from the one i read. So now i am planning on just getting an OEM HG. Is Nippon Reinz a good brand? it's from autohauz.com. By the way i will still be using all the parts of the Evergreen kit except the HG.
Now i have a problem. i removed the valves without marking it. is it true that the .20mm shims are for the exhaust and the .25mm are for the intake? I really need help in this, jewbaru? Thanks!

Make sure you use only an OEM thermostat. Otherwise you'll be back asking why your car is always overheating after the HG job.

To be honest man I'm not too sure. I replaced each seal one at a time keeping everything in order... :-/. I'm sure someone will chime in soon tho. And props to you for taking this job on as a noob. I look forward to seeing how it comes out. Keep us posted. Hope to see you get involved in our community. What you can learn here is worth quite a bit.

Deff look into the oil pump seal. I talked to a friend of mine that did a 6 year tour of duty at Subaru and he said those things use to always leak n piss everywhere. Make sure you do it before you put ur timing belt back on lol.

And were the Gallys where the plugs go in covered in oil? It's extremely common
