View Full Version : Dead's 1966 Volvo 122 Amazon Saloon w/Nissan KA24DE

11-20-2010, 11:44 AM
Well, I finally getting around to posting my Volvo project... She's not much right now, but hoping to have her driving by Summer...

I got it when I was about 7 years old from my dad. This was the car I learned with. I put a tape deck in when I was 12, and then primered it when I was 14 (it was bad... haha...). Some ask me why I'm doing a build of a 4 door Amazon Volvo. Most of it is because this is my vary 1st car, ever. the other was I got made fun of a lot in high school for it because it was an auto and a 4 door, so what better why to at back at people then make it look hot and fast as hell! I have had a love for these cars since I was a kid, but always wanted a 2 door and never got the chance. I'm now a 4 door nut for some reason and I ove the idea of killing an unsuspecting car, more so Honda's and VW's as I have felt a rivalry with then since college...

Originally it had a B20 2.0 from a 71 Volvo, with twin SU HIF carbs, and a 3 speed auto. I drove it like that till 1999 and then I got a 1970 Volvo 142 and then started restoring it.

The way I'm building it is for drift and track. 122's come in at 2400 curb wight, 300 under the Nissan S13 that the motor is from. I'm also leaving it a 4 seater so when I do have a family, we can take it church and stuff... haha

As it is now...

-shaved side trim/hood letters/hood trim/C-pillar belt trim/rear reflectors/fuel filler hole in rear deck
-deleted front bumper for fiberglass airdam
-pre 1964 tailights (solid reds, original's are red/red/white)

-what interior? haha!!!
-removed sound deadening
-modified trans tunnel for Nissan setup
-Rear seat from a 1991 Mitsubishi Eclipse
-Momo Coarse wheel (not installed)
-Front seats are to be determined...

-Currently stock coil springs
-Install 2-1/2" drop IPD sport springs front and rear (not yet installed)

-1991 Nissan KA24DE twin cam
-Nissan 5 speed
-modified cross member/oil pan
-custom motor mounts
-Volvo 164 heavy duty motor mounts

Things on the to do or pending list...
-80% of body work is done, then paint
-shave rear license plate and lights on deck lid
-strip chrome on rear bumper, weld seams and studs, re-locate license plate to bumper

Engine bay/drivetrain:
-route intercooler piping for future turbo setup
-Cooling for motor
-wiring for motor
-finish rear trans mount
-build radiator and intercooler
-re-locate oil filter
-new driveline
-Ford 9 in rear end, or 8.8 Ford rear end...
-3" exhaust... want to blow flames =)

Too much to list...

Crazy stuff for later:
-Mustang 8.8 rear end (S13 would not work)...
-Turbo set up (already have manifold and a few other parts, just want it running N/A first)
-17" wheels
-Rack and pinion setup
-Nissan cruise control
-Auto meter gauges
-mild roll cage
-Safari roof rack (I know, but it will be funny as hell!)

Pic from high school...

Motor setup as of Nov 2010...

Most resent pic from church car show

Modded Oil pan

Modded crossmember

Driver mount tacked in

Trans tunnel... Lots of work has been done since this pic...

Dude! I love it. That is going to be one amazing one of a kind Volvo.

11-20-2010, 09:40 PM
sic man, cant wait to see it completed

11-21-2010, 12:29 AM
I'm diggin it! I was kinda hoping to see one of those snail thingies sitting next to the ka like this one though.

11-21-2010, 03:17 AM
Thanks for the feedback! I'll try and get some new pics. For some reason I lost a bunch of them when I got my new laptop. I have more detailed ones coming...

As for the motor, it's a work in progress for sure! I just sold off my lifted Toyota so I should have some more time to work on my Volvo now. I'm hoping to have the shell painted by Feb, then I'll get back to the motor. Interior is a low priority right now, I want to drive it and I havent done that for 11 years now...

Oh, it will be painted gloss black for now...

11-21-2010, 08:58 AM
You Bastard :smt013 Why would u sell your yota! Lol. You'll regret it soon enough haha.

11-21-2010, 09:01 AM
Toyota for life haha

11-21-2010, 10:54 AM
I have 4 cars still and still have my 94 work truck so it's all good! The crawler was a money pic and I'm also going to be moving in the next 6-8 months and I didnt want to move a crap load of cars.

That and I had the 4x4 for about 6 years.... It was time to let it go... More time for the Volvo, Chevy, Subaru and the little truck...

11-21-2010, 12:12 PM
any pictures of the rig?

11-21-2010, 02:51 PM
any pictures of the rig?

I'll start one for it in a few days... I need to uplaod to PB and wanted feedback on the others right now...

11-10-2011, 02:44 AM
Been a long time since I did an update on my Volvo...

Haven't really done much you guys will notice... just more body work.

Got 90% of the custom work done here on the rear deck. Still not sure what I want to do with the deck lid, but I can figure it out later. As of now I have all the work done shaving the fuel filler and reflectors. Next I need to retro fit my 1962 (early, red/red/red) lights. They have different mounts, go figure... Just need to weld new tabs on, so its just about an hour worth of work...

Stage one body work is done on the left side, other then the driver door. The front fender and rear QT panel are ready for primer. The rear door is close. Driver door is FUBAR, but nothing a gallon of mud cant fix! haha!!!

The right side is so freaking close to done! I got stage one of blocking done last night. I have a couple spot to fix, but everything is looking really nice! One more prime and block and this side should be ready for paint.

Forgot to cover my motor bay when I painted my GT-B bumper... got over spray all over it... errrrr.... At least you can see my new intake system...

Driver (left) fender ready for primer...

Got it all setup with a Yakima rack also! I dont care what people say, I think it rocks!

This is the original motor I was going to put in, but the KA has more power for less money potential. Trying to sell it right now. Rare motor, but no one wants to buy thet damn thing! It's a 1974 FI B-20D if I remember right... They have 130hp stock with FI. 120 with twin carbs...

This is my dads car. Took it to a shop to have things fixed I couldnt figure out. To low tech for me!

11-10-2011, 02:55 AM
Found some more lost pics...

This is the original cluster setup... not to accurate...

This is what I'm looking to do.... Using Auto Meter stuff..

These are the wheels that will end up on it at least for a while... These are on my work truck right now. OEM Jeep wheels (Moderns) They look ok... Offset is not too bad ether...

Better pics of the intake.... This is only temp till it gets turbo'ed after its running and driving...

I've been working on her more lately. Trying to forget the girl braking my heart kinda thing you know... Hopefully I can her her in paint by Spring... Would be nice!

11-10-2011, 08:29 AM
Wow this is going to be badass!

11-10-2011, 09:48 AM

11-10-2011, 05:05 PM
Looks like a sweet project! IMO you should add a tach to your gauge cluster too

11-10-2011, 08:26 PM

awesome project!

11-11-2011, 11:06 AM
Looks like a sweet project! IMO you should add a tach to your gauge cluster too

It's gonna have a Monster tach somewhere...

And thanks all for the feedback!

11-11-2011, 11:37 AM
^ don't do that! those never look good,

just use a small one in the cluster and add a shift light so you don't have to watch it closely anyway.. 5" tachs just look ridiculous...

11-11-2011, 04:48 PM

awesome project!

I concur.

Do you need warning lights in the gauge cluster? You could raise the small gauges a bit and line them up underneath.

11-12-2011, 12:41 AM
Well, I'm not sure about the tach yet... but I like the Carbon fiber gauges and I think thy only have the big tachs. I have thought about just doing a smaller tach and having a Shift Light on my column.

As for warning lights, I dont think I will need any. But the setup is not final yet. We will see... I even thought of some how incoperating an S13 cluster in, but the wiring would be a pain...

04-20-2012, 11:52 AM
So, I got a bunch done just in the last week! I'm sick of my car not looking like a car and I also want to drive it! It's been down since high school grad day. That was almost 13 years ago!

I got a bug up my butt to get the body done. I might also be moving sometime this year and the car might not get cover, so the body needs to be painted.

My goal is to paint one body part a week till they are done...

Fenders and in the last priming stage done Tuesday.

Doors are in the last priming stage done last night.

Nose piece and air dam were painted last night.

Tuesday night.....

After 15 minutes...

Blocked and primed... Letting the primer sit till next week to make sure all shrinking is done... Then block and paint...

Right side doors have been removed... Never had the rear doors off! What a PITA!

Nose and air dam all blocked out and ready for paint... The body work on the nose is crap, but the metal looks like it was ran over by an Ambrams.... It's all kinds of jacked up, I just cant afford the new part yet... So this will work till I can find a nice one...

All new paint! Too bad they have a crap load of dirt... but the main thing was just getting paint on them so they can go outside and sealing them to the elements...

04-20-2012, 01:34 PM
How have I not seen this sooner? This is awesome!

04-20-2012, 01:45 PM
It IS awesome. But as a former 244 owner, the body looks incredibly flimsy? I'm sure you have extensive plans for bracing right? Nice project!

04-20-2012, 02:41 PM
It IS awesome. But as a former 244 owner, the body looks incredibly flimsy? I'm sure you have extensive plans for bracing right? Nice project!

Yeah, the front is a little flimsy, but I will be building a mild tube setup to make her stronger up front, I need to finish motor motor moch-up though. I still need to make sure when I do my turbo setup that the intercooler and piping will work, but I'm not doing that for a while. The rest of the car is super strong though, just the front needs a little strength. :smt023

I had a restored 1970 142 for a few years and I loved that car! I will always have a soft spot for vintage Volvo's, even the bricks!

04-21-2012, 12:09 AM
you have too many cars. at least theyre all kinda cool

04-21-2012, 03:00 AM
I have played too much Gran Trismo in the past.... I have a hard time making up my mind what I want and dont want to let them go! haha!!!! Just think what my garage would be like if I was a millionaire! LOL

04-21-2012, 05:22 AM
dude i know the feeling. i have too many cars, and the only reason i ever sell anything is because i've run out of money and my desire to have money (aka purchasing power for more things!) overpowers my desire to keep the things i have. so then i sell whatever i care about the least. its always a hard decision.

04-29-2012, 01:03 PM
Got the fenders painted... Also ordered some Skandix clear marker/signal lights!

04-29-2012, 03:15 PM

04-29-2012, 03:49 PM
That's awesome man!

04-29-2012, 10:11 PM
I love it! Good work so far ROBIN!

And is that the garage at your house? I'm jealous! lol

04-30-2012, 12:59 AM
Thanks guys! And Reason got my name spelled right! haha

Yeah, this is the shop at home, but it also doubles as my business also. Looks much bigger then it is, but I'm grateful to have it.

06-28-2012, 05:16 PM
I love it. That is all.

06-30-2012, 04:15 PM
This is great! My dad used to have 122s. I remember the last one from my early childhood. It was a red 1967 four door. Always loved these things.

07-01-2012, 04:32 PM
Lynnwood pick n pull has a '67 120 series if you needed parts.

I still think my car will be much more slick though!

09-26-2012, 11:07 AM
MOAR PICS! :smt023

09-26-2012, 11:18 AM
LOL... I havent worked on it for a while... but I'll see about getting some...

LOL... I havent worked on it for a while... but I'll see about getting some...

That is because you have a lot of projects....

09-27-2012, 12:52 PM
This whole thing is just an awesome idea. Get back on it! :smt023

10-07-2012, 12:43 PM
Havent done an update for a while...

I got the right side doors painted... PPG 9700 Black, just like the front end. This was in... July? Maybe Aug... Cant remember...

All cut in...

Outsides of them...

Just did this this last week... Pulled the left rear door and gave it hopefully it's last coat of primer.

10-13-2012, 04:38 PM
Good to see progress.

12-09-2012, 11:41 AM
Well, I got some more work done! Finished the welding/body work aspect of my tail light conversion.

I like the older pre-1963 tail lights a bit better, more of a hot rod look and also they are much more rare. The older ones dont have a reverse light, but thats fine because I'm relocated it anyway. I like the '50's look of the pre '63 lights...

Left: pre-'63
Right: '64-'68

The older lights use different mounting points so I had to build and weld new tabs to the QT panels.

01-14-2013, 08:47 PM
Any reason you went w/KA24DE instead of the 234T?
I like these kinds of builds because I've a bit of a Volvo guy myself, having owned 3 850s & 3 960s.
I'm going to keep an eye on this thread!

01-14-2013, 09:39 PM
I know Volvo motors up to 1975... LOL... I know the body's well, but thats about it...

The original plan was a motor from a V70/S70 R, but the RWD trans is a one year from Sweden. About $3000 for a 5 speed. Cant justify that.

Plan 2 was a highly built Volvo B-20 Turbo. After figuring pricing, it would have cost me $8000-10,000 to get the power I wanted (300whp) and that was still with a 4 speed.

The KA I pulled from my 1991 S13 when I swapped in a SR20DET, so the motor was free. I can get it to 300whp for much less and if it brake, I can go to a wrecker down the road. Ultimately an SR20 will make it's way in, but this motor also has a small bit of sentimental value to it since it was the motor I learned to drift with. I'm sure I'll kill it someday, but when I do, I'll just go get another one and call it a day. Volvo parts are not as easy and not as cheap.

I still dream of a turbo 5 cylinder, but I will only do it when a trans is not $3K...

01-15-2013, 03:19 PM
Those 5-bangers sound sooo amazing.

There's guys out there hooking the WC T5 up to the whiteblocks like they do with the redblocks, not sure about the details tho, are you on turbobricks?

01-16-2013, 01:06 AM
Honestly, I have never been able to find a good Volvo forum that had RWD cars. Just FWD. I would love to talk to some vintage Volvo guys though!

01-18-2013, 01:25 PM
Honestly, I have never been able to find a good Volvo forum that had RWD cars. Just FWD. I would love to talk to some vintage Volvo guys though!

Turbobricks is biased towards RWD & Swedespeed is biased towards FWD but TB is the site w/all of the crazy whiteblock swap info. Like Carl Buchka's T5 Whiteblock swapped 242 or Chris Wiita's turbo 6304 turbo 965. Those are some AMAZING build threads.

01-20-2014, 02:10 PM
Any updates on this?

01-20-2014, 02:12 PM
Yep... it's a storage unit... LOL

01-20-2014, 02:13 PM
Actually, I did start prepping out the door jams for paint, but then I just got to busy with other projects. Hoping t paint the shell this summer.

01-20-2014, 10:16 PM
I want to see this finished.

01-20-2014, 10:44 PM
LOL... Me too!

04-08-2015, 12:29 PM
Sooo... I did pick these up a while back. A set of (2002?) Acura RSX Limited seats. Actually really nice and comfy! One has a blow airbag (like I care... haha) and a small rip, but it can be repaired. I got them for a whopping $60 bucks for the pair! Will be super easy to mount in the Volvo with the flat floor pans.

Sorry, no more update on this ride... I have started to clean it out, but time is a killer these days.

And this is how I'm actually using them at the moment... haha...
