could it be the water pump? and the top radiator hose has a lot of pressure in it and the resivor always overflows when it overheats.

Sounds like a blown head gasket.

Did you use an OEM thermostat?

had the same problem like 7 monthhss ago i got a 97 legacy gt ..at first i changed the water pump and it continued so then i had it checked out somewhere else... he did some pressure test and he found out it was the headgasket....cost me 1300 to fix it...but that was with a new radiator, headgasket, timing belt, water pump, and he bore out my heads ... i hope everything works out....
try the post i had before ....

Yeah I hope so too. This morning it knocked really loud and it continued even after it wormed up.

I would double check coolant and fluid levels. Low oil can make things noisy.
And yes DO NOT use any other thermostat other then an OEM Thermostat.
