Have you check the entire timing belt? Sorry to see the carnage let us know what you find when you dig deeper.

Have you fitted a secondhand motor at any point? That looks like old frontal damage has fractured the pulleys and they've finally let go.

Well, this happened while the car was idling. Stopped to fuel up, left the Wife, and Kids in the car (running). I went in a paid for My fuel, and came out to the car not idling anymore!

AFAIK, Everything is OEM. No telltale signs of any previous body work.

I turned the crank bolt and everything turned, about 1" then seemed to bind on the broken pulley

same thing happened to a car my co-worker now has.
valves will be bent.

and thats why you should ALWAYS change all the pulleys, when you do a timing belt.

I worked on a bug eye ts that had the same pulley strip going down the freeway at 70, stripped every last tooth off the timing belt lol. Also bent several valves.

Jeff, from The Machine Shop called. Valves Ground, Lash Set, Surfaced Shaved, replaced 1 Bent Valve. = $381.80

He said that He's done hundreds of Suby heads, and never encountered only one bent valve on a 16 valve engine. Usually it's 2 or more. ??? :smt017

So I guess I got lucky there. The engine stopped within a couple mm's of TDC #1, showing about 6 stripped teeth off the belt.

Waiting on My Gaskets, should be here today. Water pump will be in on Fri.

Hoping to have My Wife back on the road Sat.

Well, I only got one side buttoned up. Wasted 2 Hrs tracking down a RR timing cover, and a Piano Recital took 4 hrs away from work.

I bought an Ebay gasket kit, but chickened out on the Graphite Head Gaskets that came with it. Spent $80 on the Subaru HG's. I wish I could have tracked down some spray Hylomar, but none available in town :smt013

Gonna haveta skip Church tomorrow, and get it all buttoned up.

i thought subie engines are non interfrence, where the belts snap not causing valve to piston damage? i cant remember where i read that? but this will make it clear for me

SOHC's are non-interference, DOHC's are interference. They have valve vs valve damage.
