i have a swapped 99lgt. im getting really sick of spinning the inside wheel. just wondered what kind of solutions anyone has come up with. mine is 5spd so i have 4.11 i know they are around but do i need diff axles? also the wrx ones are cheaper. could i swap just the lsd part? thanks

An LSD from an automatic WRX will have a 4.11 FD, and fit using your current axles.

^ that or you can use the LSD part from any Subaru R160 and rebuild it with the ring from your diff.

ok sweet. So I can just use the LSD unit from any r160. Is it easy... just swap them or is the adjusting involved? My buddy had one put in his miata by a shop and they screwed it up.

Unless it has the same gear ratio, you will NEED to swap the ring gear from your current diff to the new one. And other than some of the GC STIs, all the R160s use viscous LSDs, which are still going to spin the inside tire some.. Maybe not as much.

the viscous lsd used in the 05- LGT r160 will not fit in the older r160 case. just to save you guys some time/money...

The LSD r160s in 80s subarus were actually clutch packed, those are the ones to get and you can still source the internals from a dealership.

Or you could just buy a Quaife LSD suitable for your current drivetrain and not worry about the "if this part fits or doesn't it?" scenarios...

A Quaife is a "Torque biasing" diff and uses a worm gear drive/helical mechanism - it costs around $1300 though, granted a Cusco clutch-type unit costs around that much as well. A Kaaz or some other type of clutch type LSD costs around $700-1000.

I was quoted by Rallispec around $700 plus labor to get a clutch type LSD in the rear (forgot who made that particular LSD, but it's a major manufacturer of LSD's and theyre an extremely competent shop so I wouldn't doubt their recommendations).

I also want to upgrade my diffs on the outback. I live in Minnesnowta so sometimes (all the time) I want all 4 to lock up and get me by those damn trucks (4x4 blows- AWD rocks) I was thinking of getting the VCD system from a junked outback H6. how hard is this to accomplish? I have seen it done b4 to a impreza wagon so I know its doabla.

The VCD is a computerized system that applies braking power to the spinning wheel. I doubt retrofitting it is easy. Quaife makes both front and rear limited slip differentials but they're expensive and you'll have to open up the transmission to get to the front diff.
