I recently picked up a cobbled-together old JC Sports turbo kit from a friend, with the intention to twin charge the wagon down the road. I've been saving money and planning the twin-charge project, so I just threw on the turbo kit so I can get around town.

I figured in the mean time, I'd post up some info on how it all works for those who are interested in only turbo'ing their car.

Basic Specs:

TD04 WRX turbo, custom WG bracket with 06/07 5 psi wastegate
Custom JC Sports TMIC, up/down pipes
Turbo XS MBC
Turbo XS RFL bypass valve
WRX MAF
Emanage Ultimate 05 STi 535cc injectors
1/8 NPT oil T into oil galley plug under alternator
Custom oil pan with drain tube
Leaking oil drain tube

This setup runs really nice using Nasioc member morocco88's Emanage map. With wastegate pressure, and the MBC detatched, the turbo begins to spool at 2200 RPM, and is fully spooled by 3000. At 8 psi with the MBC, spool starts at 2500, and peaks at 3500. Its pretty fun to drive, especially on the highway going into the mountains. I turned the boost up to 10 psi for a quick run, and it absolutely howled. Too bad the clutch slips in 4th gear at that boost level. It looks like a new clutch will get added to the list of parts to buy for.

Hopefully I can get this turbo setup to work in tandem with the supercharger. I'll put up another thread just for the twin-charge project when that time comes in a couple months.

Better than having the super charger? I cannot imagine the experience twin charging this thing. We need Vids now!

Very cool nord. Another legacy to go down in the history books :-D

Why not make it twincharged/compound charged?

Have you seen FAT's compound charger kit?

More tuning and fancier parts will put a fat smile on your face.. Wider and more straining then the one you got from the 10psi run :-D

It's a bit more driver-friendly than the SC, just because boost is linear and smooth, rather than on/off.

Chuck, that link is amazing! I still can't figure out how they cram so much stuff in there!

Ya FAT did a great job shoving all that in but its not that hard.... heres a BC with an garret turbo and m62 supercharger.

There are so many builds like the one above that it should make you go... I have all this why not do it :-D

My only concern is how exactly does it work?>

Some systems use two boost controllers working together to regulate each induction system.
Some systems use solenoids / actuators to give a "switch over" effect.
Some systems I have never seen ?
-Chuck

P.S. DO IT!

Oh yes, I've read reddevil's threads about 4 times over. He's been my inspiration ever since I started tinkering with my car. I like to make my setups a little more ... reliable than his :lol but I have a ton of respect for his projects. My build will basically model this very picture.

Oh, and to answer your question, the system that Reddevil used in his setups in the picture about are sequential systems, meaning the turbo feeds air to the intake of the supercharger, which goes through the intercooler and into the engine. I plan on doing the same setup. Boost multiplies with this setup too, so I'll probably run my OEM-sized pulley on the SC to begin with so I don't blow the engine outright with 20 psi.

Are you serious?! That's awesome! If you ever talk to him, mention that there's this kid in Colorado that has idolized his projects.

Yes sir dead serious. He kinda fell off the face of the earth. I rarely see him and when I PM him on the Legacycentral forums I never get a reply anymore.

He has a green wagon with a first gen hood w/ scoop and tint job.

I'm really unsure of what happened to the red wagon. It was there than gone.

Interesting. Try NASIOC, I have PM'd him in the last few months there and gotten replies.

So, now that the wagon is turbo full-time; I figure I'd mess around with E85...

Result? Torque is through the roof! At 12psi, the wagon dusts stock WRX's, and can still pull on some modded ones too. That comparison is totally arbitrary, but I haven't dyno'd so I can't say the real power levels. I can say that it feels somewhere around the 250-260 CHP level. The best part? The TurboXS knocklite has yet to even turn yellow, and it unit is set at the highest sensitivity! E85 is amazing stuff.

On E85, my last tank of 100% city netted exactly 18 MPG, which isn't terrible, and is in fact 82% of the mileage that I get driving somewhat conservatively in town on 91 OCT.

Next step? Raise boost, go faster.

Yea E85 is really good with boost. Do you have a lot of sations around that sell? Is this your primary car? If you were not at such a high altitude could you put out more power at those boost levels? Nice numbers. When you are tuned you should dyno that beast!

There's 2 places in town, and there's plenty around the state. This is my one and only car; I've put about 10k on this turbo setup with zero problems. At sea level, I'd pick up another 3 psi, and power would increase accordingly.

I herd that that E85 is nasty stuff and can eat through O-rings in your fuel system. I don't know how much truth there is in that but you might want to keep an eye out for any leaks that develop.

Not true; modern cars don't require a change in rubber seals, that's only a problem with really old cars.

Redesigned the intake to be less ghetto. I suppose it's still a little ghetto, but it has a more organized feel.

The clutch reservoir was giving me woes where the intercooler was banging into it all the time, so I made this:

You sir, are an inspiration. I think I really want to turbo my Outback.

Great Job!

hmm was the DP custom?

I wanted to try this but I was going to buy a used EJ22 since most likely the used EJ25D are all got problems.
