ok heres my Q? aight my engine crapped out on me finally and i need a new engine. was looking around found some for around $1200-1700. i know that we have to use a sohc and the 6th vin number has to be a 6, right? and so if the 6th numbers the same the engine can just drop in and plug up right?
does that seem like a good price range for our engines, some have higher miles then other that's the reason for the jump in prices.

I think that those prices are kind of high, to be honest.
If you couldn't find the exact same engine as yours, you could always install a new 2.5 sohc longblock and swap over everything from your old engine, (ie. wiring, etc), to include the cam gears (some years had different triggers between manual and auto) and you'll be in business. Physically the ej25x sohc motors are interchangeable, though the electronics and certain external things are different between the years.

I friend of mine pitched me this website:
http://risingsunengines.com/
That he used for one of his Hondas. I never bought an engine, just rebuilt mine but I got a quote for 800 for a EJ25 short block for my BK.
Primitive Racing has a used EJ25 that they tore out for a rally car build on their used parts list for about the same price.
This is all assuming you want to go that route..
Look at eBay too. Seems like everybody and their brother and sister has a pulled EJ engine on there.

Save yourself the headache and just buy a used JDM engine. Find a local japan engine importer and tell them the year and engine size for your car. It should not cost more then $1000 after taxes. You get a low mileage engine that has not really seen any abuse.
Or use http://www.car-parts.com and find the closest cheapest engine to you. In my area with your specs I found one as cheap as $555 and as expensive as $1100. Again these are higher mileage engines then the JDM versions...
Cheers

I've heard of risingsun and I've heard of tigerjapanese. "Heard of" I mean I've heard good things.

Umm, does it make a difference if you're going from SOHC to DOHC? You were talking about not wanting to change all the electrical stuff, right? Well, we don't have an EJ252 or EJ251 here. Your BE9 (yes, it's a BE9) has one of those engines whereas our BE9 has the EJ254. I'm sure there are more differences than just DOHC and SOHC, but I'm not mechanically minded so I wouldn't be able to tell.
But if none of that matters, then nevermind I said anything.
