What did you do with the original bumper? Sell it?

nice wagon! i've seen it over on nasioc and thought the s14 front looked pretty cool.

so what DID you do with the original front bumper?

mranlet
03-01-2006, 12:28 PM
I've still got it. It's got a 3" long split on the right side of the roughly textured area that looks like a fake bull bar and it's been trimmed on the inside to accomodate a big heat exchanger like an intercooler or oil/atf cooler. That is one crazy tough bumper - it's been drifted into many many things including the back of a Chevy van and a 86 Corolla ;)

I suppose I'd sell it if the price was right, but I haven't thought about it. PM me if you want to talk about that.

Thanks for the comments folks!

mranlet
03-02-2006, 01:21 PM
http://www.bissettnursery.com/Mason/Images/Misc/Const-Adhesive-1.jpg

I made molds from resin and injected urethane construction adhesive into the molds. For my motor mounts, I just injected urethane into the gaps in the rubber.

One of these days I'll do a how-to for something like steering rack bushings.

It's one of the few 5MT outbacks a round, and I've ruined the AWD forever ;)

My 127 is pretty stout for a 150,000 mile EJ25. My final drive is a 4.08:1 on 205-50-15s, so it feels really torquey.

I'm working on this right now:

Dual inlet throttle body??? Umm... Wow!!

And with the HP numbers, you're getting 127 as a RWD set up and just an upgraded intake & shorty exhaust???
Hmmm... This causes me to start thinking some evil things (remove front drive shaft) from the wife's GT sedan.

BTW, we never got to see any interior shots of the car. What's up with that? :-D 8)

Interior shots exist, but I tend to think of them as less important than the driveline and action shots.

The rwd conversion didn't get me any power over other comparable outbacks from awd dynojets. The sidepipe itself freed up about 12 ft/lb of torque, verifying that Subaru doesn't know how to build a good exhaust for a fleet car.

Go for the rwd conversion, but be ready with an excuse for a busted axle or differential.

That pic is only half of what I'm working on... I'm making ITBs

Well that's cool to know that the 2.5 motors show about 127 whp on a dyno since they're 165 hp at the crank.
As for the RWD conversion, it was just a thought since a buddy did that to his AWD Impreza that was upgraded with a turbo. He has had good results so far, but it's also his beater/project car too.

I like the new wheels. Are you going to be hiding that oil cooler a bit? Also, the rear fender looks good, but it looks like you stopped short right before the fender ends up front, and it looks a little wavy?

Getting a tranny out of a STi or what?

sybir

That's a nice job. It's easy to buckle the panels if you're not careful, and it looks like it came out clean. I like the lip, and that should give you both the lateral and vertical space you're going to need with the +0's.

Are you going to run into wheelwell (not fender) clearance issues with the massively increased scrub radius on the +0's, or are the new hubs going to sit inboard enough that it won't be an issue?

Thanks! I'm not sure what I'm doing with the oil cooler; it doesn't fit very well behind my aero bumper unless I put it where a FMIC would go, and then it blocks the radiator and people think it's turbo  I'm considering revamping my mounts and having it sit outside the bumper a-la Bosozoku/old school Japanese race cars...

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2006/10/nismo_fes_2005_18-2.jpg

I'm not sure why it looks wavy like that in the picture, but it's pretty uniform in person. When I was doing it I figured that it would just be a rough pull to get in the general area of where I need the fender, but the more I look at the more I like it this way.

Transmission is coming from a G35 ;)

Thanks, and yeah, the rears are hard as hell since there is only an inch and a half or so of material to work with before it hits the top of the wheel well.

I will accually be modifying the kingpin angle to maintain the same scrub radius that Subaru engineers in to the suspension from the factory on the stock 15" wheels. Let me explain:

When the centerline of the wheel is moved outboard, scrub radius (the distance between the kingpin angle's vertex at the road surface and the centerline of the tire at the road surface) will incrase. By lengthening the lower control arm by just a hair and moving the strut top inboard slightly (with correction for camber done at the upright), the line projected from the upper strut mount to the pavement will be at a slightly more horizontal angle. This moves the kingpin angle's vertex a bit more outboard, decreasing scrub radius.

In short: No, I don't think scrub radius will be a problem. I'll also be soon stepping up to 12kg/mm front and 10kg/mm rear springs, so vertical travel will be limited. I'm still using all stock sway bars and bushings to avoid inside wheel lift under hard cornering with such stiff spring rates.

sybir
10-17-2006, 04:45 PM
Good stuff. I'm running 10/8's with a 24mm front sway and stock rear, with no tire lift issues, so you should be just fine. You might consider a front swaybar, but I'm not drifting my car, so the ideal initial corner balance may be a little different.

I think I'll be stepping up my endlinks front and rear, but that is down the list of things to do.

I think I'll be running some Cragar soft 8 wheels for now, since they're cheap as hell and readily available, but I'm considering some Ford Racing FR500s in the near future. The FR500s are lighter, still cheap and accually come in colors!

Pics momentarily.

EJ22T/2.5SOHC hybrid is probably the only single turbo engine I'd put in the car. Loved it in my old car and it would be even better in a RWD setup.

Since last time I've posted I have successfully incorporated OEM Nissan 240SX axles in 5x1145.3 hubs in the rear with Infiniti J30 vented disc and am nearing completion on FC Turbo II RX7 front uprights with 4-pot calipers.

Also now have Megan Track (12/10kg/mm rates) to eliminate roll and improve damping.

No good videos of me drifting, but I'll get right on it ;)

lookin good Nick. It'll look better 2" off the ground ;)

After going with Infiniti J30 rear brakes on my Legacy...
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2007/03/P1011742JPG-2.jpg
...I have no room for an E-brake lever at the caliper due to the proximity of the caliper to the body.

So, I need to go with a hydraulic Ebrake. Ksport has this:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2007/03/hydraulicebrake-1.jpg
...which is great for cars without interiors or for those who don't need to set the Ebrake for parking. However, I do need to and I want my interior to look clean.

Hence this:

Hydro Ebrake, hidden under center console and fully function stock lever with ratchet system and all. I need to gather the Right and Left rear brake lines into a single in IN and OUT, but once it's plumbed it will grab hold like Stallone in Cliffhanger!

Question for you regarding the Megan Coilovers (I know you sold them).
Do you know what the part # was?

I checked out Megan Racing's website, they didn't list anything for the Legacy, so I'm assuming you went with an Impreza setup?

mranlet
03-24-2007, 02:51 AM
I used Megan coilovers for 2002-2004 WRX. The front top hats need to be swapped side to side and rotated in order to adjust camber, otherwise they adjust caster.

Finished routing the lines for the hydraulic Ebrake and blasted away the passenger side sound deadening with my needle scaler (barnicle remover for the nautically inclined).

Should be receiving my ball joints for the RX7 upright and brake conversion Monday. After this coming week, I should have 4 or 5x114.3 bolt pattern both front and rear with powerful brakes and lots of steering angle.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2007/08/P1012733JPG-1.jpg

The steering angle isn't as gross on the ground, but it is way more than an axle would accomodate.

These wheels are probably going to be the track wheels, as I have 15 x 10" -38 wheels that will most likely be my showy/daily wheels. I currently have 195-60-15s stretched on them, but that will be replaced with something a little more sane, like a 225-50-15.

More than anything the 10s are to promote that my shop can mount rediculous things. At car shows and track meets I'll be able to stick business cards between the bead of the tire and the mounting face of the shell.

Sure is. A whopping 125whp EJ25 DOHC with nothing but 2.5" Header-back and 200mm HKS DD header. I am, however, working on an ITB setup for a Phase II motor that I have, which will eventually all go in to this car. My goal is probably something on the order of 200hp NA.

It feels really weird having kids come up to me while changing tires and saying things like "Wow, how did you do that?", "Is this a factory option?", and "Can I take a picture of it?" - I built the car for myself and drive it every day, so it seems normal to me, but it takes a fair amount of explaining to people who haven't seen the car before.

Also, a rolling photo at drift event (car had too much grip to break loose):

I've been busy working on my V8 Cressida project, so not much to add as of late. About a month ago I hit a huge block of foam on the highway and punctured my AC condensor :womp womp:

Pics I took for the insurance company, which I never sent:

Thanks guys!

The bumper was damaged before from driveways and the normal "cost of low" tribulations, but the debris I hit did it in. I happen to have a minorly cracked Silvia fiberglass lip that I'm going to graft on to the bottom and it should be ship-shape.

Here are just a few pics of the Cressida, but I'll make a full build thread in Rides 2 when it's something special to look at...

The 170k-mile Phase I EJ25 is starting to get some light knock on #3 or #4, probably because every seal on the motor is leaking oil and it can't keep itself wet, I'm getting a MAF code and running rich as hell. So, all the more reason to light a fire under my ass to put in my MAP-sensored Phase II unit fron a 2002 2.5RS with less than 70k on it.

Of course, I want to finish my ITB manifold before relinquishing my working model to the confines of an engine bay:

I bought a Joe's Linkage for the cross-wise synchronization and these sweet ass UNI filters from Cycle Gear in town here. They come with the same kind of band clamp I need to run open velocity stacks, which will be the prefered method at drift events and places where I want to show them off or need the little bit of extra airflow. Runners are going to be tuned to length based on where my power peak is on the stock RS manifold once the motor is in and running.

Process will go like this:
- Finish ITBs minus setting runner length
- Swap in RS motor
- Dyno RS motor
- Tune runner length so that Hemholtz requencies help force more air into the engine at that point
- Install ITBs
- Redyno car with ITBs
- ???
- Profit

Changing lanes on Busch this morning on the way to work while going under the speed limit, I checked for traffic over my shoulder like you're supposed to and when I looked back there was a truck stopped at a green light due to cross-traffic bastages trying to cheat the light. His trailer hitch decimated my bumper support and even breached my timing cover.

I already cut out all the destroyed core and bumper supports as well as the radiator and AC condenser, heatlights, turn signals, fans, timing cover, accessory belts, timing belt, right bank cam pulleys, and some other stuff I'm forgetting.

I have insurance on injury, property and liability, but not on the vehicle itself, so out-of-pocket costs look like they're going to be around $500 if I can get some good deals (help me out with whatever you've got, or buy some of my stuff or have me weld a diff for you).

As long as the crossmember, suspension points and transmission hardpoints aren't tweaked it will be coming back in a big way...

Make no mistake, this is still the same car, but mostly in the same way that a soul gets transported from one host to another like in Ghost in the Shell or Chucky. It feels exactly the same, drives the same, has the same driver interface, everything. Although the green chassis has given me and some others good times and was even immortalized in Slide America, it's ready to pass on to the next level of existence.

I had gotten it running for a while on a 00 RS motor, but in typical Phase II fasion piston #1 powderized in the block. I was working on getting my EJ20H working in it, but was going to do a Megasquirt complete in order to run antilag. Alas, I'd rather combine my driving but not running car with my running and not driving car.

Changes include 94 Legacy RS Wagon body, EJ22T engine and just an STI Turbo outlet. Pig plans for exhaust, skidplates, etc.

BTW, I am parting out the green car so if anyone wants any interior, glass, window motors, door linkage, etc. please PM me.

OK, here's some catch-up:

Transmission conversion went well - been rolling around with a noisy as hell 6MT Z33 transmission due to it being grindy and fucked up to begin with and being further aggravated by lack of a dual-mass flywheel. However, in the last 6 months I've been able to drive the car a total of about 3 weeks. I'm pretty well getting over the entire project... It's been one headache after another, including cracking the rear subframe on a huge pothole, headlights falling apart, ripping the front tire and fender on an emergency off-roading, stripping the teeth out of the hub of a cheap clutch disc, a locking up a/c compressor that also took out the alternator belt and spun the crank pulley, and chasing down a mystery oil leak that's so prolific that I drained out 3 quarts in about 20 minutes. The car is basically falling apart and I spend more time repairing it than I do driving it.

So, I'm seriously contemplating parting everything out.

I've got a testing waters thread in the For Sale forum, but either need encouragement to keep going or interest in buying the components.

Either way it's been a hell of a ride and a great experience, and I can't thank all of you guys enough for your enthusiasm in the project.

Here's the string-along update:
I had to sell the engine to a buddy for his Manx style buggy due to financial reasons. That thing rips every gear and can't keep grip with all the torque. I also sold the Megan tracks off of the shell and have some mega-old and mega-shitty D2 racing coilovers on it. Sold one set of the 15x8s, so it's sitting on 15x8 front and 15x10 rear right now. Z33 transmission also got sold. Right now the car is sitting in storage across the alley from where I work and has for the past 6-8 months.

Although I've gotten busy with life an keep trying to wash my hands of this car, realistically I know that I will never be able to do that. I've been jonesing to put it back together and drive it all over the place, but the big hangup (as is always the case) is money...

Plans for the car vary depending on what mood I'm in, but I think if I have my way the changes I make will be this:
- More fender work to finish off the rears
- BG front end
- EG33 SVX engine with ITBs and standalone (I'm also considering a single turbo conversion on one of the cheap GTB engines from ebay, but running an Evo 8 turbo and toggle-switched anti-lag)
- STI 6-speed with spooled center section for RWD once again
- Revamped and roll center adjusted rear R200 subframe
- 50 Cal machine guns mounted in the rear door openings
- Smoke screen in the tailgate
- Sharks

I'll post things as they happen, if they happen, here first. I just felt I owed you guys some news considering how greatly loved this car is even by people I've never met. Thanks for the encouragement through the years to stick through with this car - it's often been the difference between sending the whole thing to the scrapyard and making it live again.

Hang on, ITB's with an intercooler? Now I'm thoroughly confused.

mranlet

Evo 8 turbo
TMIC with center inlet and side endtanks made from two WRX top mounts
Velocity stacks from RB26 ITBs (substituting GSXR throttles for mockup) will feed directly fron endtanks
2.25 to 4 inch transition and 4" downpipe to 3.75" exhaust
Means shorter exhaust path before the turbo, the power capacit of a huge front mount with the short piping of a top mount (with only two couplers and one intercooler pipe)

I believe, the car is still under R&D. Mocking up parts consistently and removing, is all in the process. But, it's not mine and I'm no where near him, so I'll let him confirm that.

Dual TMIC is going to be plumbed to ITBs. Working on the lower throttle assemblies now, that's why it's off. I worked on the rear fender a little already:

This is the front right from a BMW E46 M3. Just modified it a little.

so awesome. I'm curious about that ITB setup you got therr... I've got an AE86 as well as a legacy, and I wondered what it took to do ITBs on a subaru lol.

Chuck, I think this should answer that question:
https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/403244_2415473868527_1301756252_31917286_1419445871_n.jpg

The ITBs have been years worth of part collecting and clever engineering. Tomei maes a set for WRX with their own manifold and all, but the price is more than I have in my entire car up to this point.

Relax Kansei, all of the parts I need are going back in. When you take a car far apart, you still have to put it back together. ;)

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2006/03/R20020Subframe20in20car20closeupJPG-1.jpg

R200 rear differential from S14 Nissan 240SX
Custom built R200 rear subframe
Custom rear uprights with Nissan S14 5-lug hubs and OEM Nissan axles
Kaaz 2-way clutch type LSD

..

From what I can gather he used the entire hub/spindle/strut assembly. Modified the top hats and used custom lateral links (control arms) and Trailing Arms.

Here is a s14 rear end.

I belive its a S14 (240sx) aftermarket bumper... Its a R33 (skyline) GT-R style bumper. Alot of makers have made this bumper for alot of car like integras and civics.

Ok I have been pondering this for several days now, and this rear suspension pic is with out a doubt using the 240sx rear crossmember...based on the suspension mounting points. So i'm starting to think he used the whole 240 rear crossmember assembly...damn I wish he would just come back, this rearend quandry is the only thing about my next car that I can't figure out. I wish one of my friends still had a 240 so i could co lay under it for a while haha
