Hey All,
So here is the deal, i just bought a 1995 Subaru Legacy L wagon ($800). it is the only car that i own at this time and i want to make it into a sick nasty all wheel drive rally daily driver. here is what it is now.
dark blue '95 legacy L ej22
5 sp. manual trans.
225,700 miles
bone stock.
hubcaps on 14" steely's
alpine stereo (heck ya!)
check engine light:...illuminated
What i have done...
mounted 2 fog lights in place of fog deletes
custom light bar with 2 KC lights.
'98 outback hood w/ scoop
Cobra Nightwatch CB radio
What i Plan to do...
'99 outback strut swap - strait across for 1.5" lift.____________Finished!
4 rally armour mud flaps (red or black)
two more kc lights.
new cv shaft.___________Finished!
skid plate
American flag and last name in back windows(had to include that)__________finished!
exhaust - i'm thinking 2.5 or 3" cat back or catless with magnaflow
strip off the A/C
possible motor swap(finances permitting)
Paint!
Please post any suggestions or comments. sorry i am new at sl-i so i dont have pics yet but they are coming soon. really soon. i will probably need some help with a few things so use your experience to make you sound smart. thanks for looking

It never helps when your words are cut up like that :smt005
if your serious you will have to compromises.. more noise, vibration and harshness.. (NVH) Rally is expensive even weekend warriors.. blown shocks.. hitting things.. $100's in repairs each time. Daily driver and Nasty Rally never go well together or at least not very sensible.
I wish you luck.. and some advice.. your driving one of the lightest legacies besides the sedan. your chassis is a good choice and can be fitted with a large amount of impreza parts.

Welcome!!
this build WILL be fun for you!
My thoughts (based from my experience and researching on moding my 95 L sedan):
Don't go catless or over 2.25" and keep the "Y" pipe. your motor needs some back pressure.
(when I did my exhaust I went 2.25", from research suggestions, pulled the cats and went through a Magnaflow. I had just done strut lift and 205x75 14" AT tires. It was CRAZY-LOUD and I lost ALL low end power. It practically stalled out trying to turn corners downshifting to 2nd. I had the cats reinstalled and put a cherry bomb in-line as a resonator upstream of the magnaflow. Now I have low end, less top end (in 5th) b/c of tire size, but it cruises fine on the highway. It's got a nice mellow DEEP exhaust note and isn't ricer loug, given magnaflow and 2.25" pipe.)
If you do intake mods, keep the stock airbox (maybe pull the intake resonator out of the fender well) but clean up the plastic piping between the MAF sensor and the intake manifold.
keep the 14" steelies and I'll sell you my pretty darn new 27x8.5 General Grabber AT2 tires, that I bought a few months ago to pass inspection, and rally at Miller Sports Park last fall. I have some other 16s I want to mount with the grabbers.
That's my reflexive input based on your mod list. I'd be happy to share any other tid-bits I've come accross in fiddling with my sedan.
And I'm going to try to make it to the Feb rally at MSP, so it'd be rad to see your rig, show you my rig and meet you and Lord Flashheart.
cheers and welcome!

so here is somewhat of an update of the wagon. i know i havent been too good about posting things for it.
got the outback sway bar for the rear. installed, no trouble, only took about 15 minutes.
installed new brakes
installed the front only, outback struts. i know i know, it looks like i have 400 pounds of stuff in the back, but i wasnt able to get the last strut from the junkyard to finish the lift(christmas holiday) anyway the back are coming soon.
painted the HUB caps gold. (thats just for temporary looks until i get my '15's with the bfg's).
what else? oh yea, i got jdm yellow xenon headlights(really bright!) with two 100 watt yellow driving lights, jdm. also super bright. and then i have my two KC lights both 100 watts each. so all in all thats about 550 watts of lightage. haha. now i am prepared for a vampire attack.

that would be sick if i could buy those from you . i checked into it, if i found some used rims for lets say 100 bucks, i still need to buy tires, and les schwabb quoted me at about 450 for 4 bfg's or similar, so i am really looking for some used ones.
oh and thanks for the info on the exhaust. i am going to check into a small little shop around here. i talked to a kid and he said that a his friend just got a 2.5" with muffler fo around $175

Yeah I found another bro hook up for out area. A guy works at a muffler shop that will make a 2.5 catback for dirt cheap.

checkit: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=General&tireModel=Grabber+AT+2
neary identica to the BFG but like 20-25% less
I've run the 27x8.5 14" BFGs and like the grabbers better. better snow digging nd mud/snow shedding from the tread, I think a touch better lug spacing and maybe deeper tread than the BFGs... ooh and again, lots cheaper.
I'd think you could score a set of steelies cheaper than $100 from JYs up there...
I purchased, shipped ( to moab) and installed (in Moab) these grabbers for i think around 5 bills...
support local, though he worked with me on my price comparisons, tends to cost more.... at lease down here
At any rate, I'd chat with you about selling you these, of course I'll need to get my other grabbers too ;)
les schwabb quoted me at about 450 for 4 bfg's or similar
installed??!! Man, life's cheaper in the big city!!
And i'll reiterate suggesting not going over 2.25" on your exhaust... K, done reiterating ;)
Also, let me retract my suggestion of pulling the snorkus (intake resonator plumbing) from your fender... leave it, at least at first, and if you do pull it, don't trow it away.... find your best performance configuration through trials and testing!
notice any difference in your handling with the OB sway bar?
I guess it's all kinda jacked with the front lifted and not the back though...
cheers!

updayt:
Finally finished the ob lift!! finally finally finally. so it sits much higher now, the ob struts really did a lot. i even estimate about 2" more in the back. it was the same in the front but it has settled a little. i assume that the back will do the same. but it does look and feel higher. i love it.
after i finished the lift i took it to the church parking lot to play in the fresh snow we recieved to day.
i was amazed! the car used to understeer on the drifts in the snow but now with the thicker sway bar in the back it is absolutely perfect! i just tap the throttle to start and maybe gas it through the turn and it maintains a perfect angle. of course a few things need to be tweaked but i think it does better at least.
oh and a question "superu", the out back struts seem to rub a little on the inside of the fender, it is starting to scrape off the Rhino line type stuff that is on the inside of the strut. any sugestions? its just barely and its only one side. would an alignment fix that do you think?
and about the wheels. i have the stock steelies that came with the car, that im actually rockin right now, and they are 14". i would really like some other wheels though.
the price that les schwabb quoted me was for just the tires. not installed that would be about another 50 to 60 or so.
all in all its coming along and i am really enjoying it!
there has been a few obstacles but its great fun. hopefully i will get to continue to work on it as much as i have but i fear that school will start to get in the way. i just started today
oh and ps, pictures coming soon, i still am not sure if i know how to add them to a post

Ooh, yeah. I think I've got a little of that too
Is it the driver's side rear?
I ignore it. Alternatively, you could jack up the car, take the strut out and use your BFH to "massage" that area deeper than the surrounding fender lining. But I don't think it'll affect anything. In fact I never remember that until I have that side up in the air and take the tire off... I don't think alignment will pull it out enough to prevent contact... It's just an artifact of modification, you know, making something that it wasn't originally... I think it only touches at full suspension extension, so unless you jack the car up a lot, or take lots of jumps, or even if you do, it's not a serious problem, just fender-liner cosmetics.

Yeah, it's true aftermarket wheels look beter than factory steel 14's, but I want to pass on the tires I had to get to pass inspection (since the 16" grabbers were on back order for like 3+ months last fall), ooh and to rally cross in last fall ;)

keep at it though, and keep at the car :smt023

Ooh, pic uploading...
You kinda need to host photos online somewhere (e.g. picasa, photobucket, cardomain, flickr, etc.).
once you have that set-up,
right-click on a pic to view it from that site and select "copy image location",
then in a forum thread (like here) click the "URL" button above your text window and
paste (right click then paste) or <ctrl> v (to use the keyboard shortcut for "paste")
It took me a few years of part-time forum surfing, confusion, and questions to get that one figured out :smt005
But now, look out!! I'm a pic posting fool! :smt026
Alternatively (and not as good), you can attach them from your computer using the stuff below your text typing window, in the forum section of the page called "Upload attachment"

K, just seeing if this picture thing works, these are the wheels that i found, hopefully i can pic them up for under 100 dollars, thats what he wants for them. they are 15" but a few tire shops have told me that gives me more options. but there are always tons of options for both onlinehttp://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=389&search=15%20in%205%20lug&ssid=13958113#1
