View Full Version : Keep breaking flex plates?

Hey guys my friend bought a 92 legacy turbo wagon. First flexplate looked like this.

and couple days ago once again the flexplate has broken after about a month of driving rougly.

Except this flexplate was paired to a much better condition transmission yet still this flexplate snapped. I still need to pull the motor or tranny to take it apart but I can clearly see the flex plate snapped in the same spot when you hit the starter (as you can imagine I can't start the car...).

I am thinking the crank is walking, but I don't see how it would damage the flexplate like this ^^

Engine sounds really smooth and the crank seal did not appear to be leaking.

How soft are your engine and transmission mounts?

Well the engine mount might be broken. He mentioned the plastic bell housing cover fell in the hole and he thinks it possibly fell in and jammed the flexplate.

There is no way that little plastic piece would break the flexplate.

Is the engine stock? I'm not sure crankwalk would cause this kind of problem, as the torque convertor can move in and out of the trans quite a bit. In order for it to walk that much, you would have to have a hell of a lot of crankwalk. But you could always check by trying to push the crank pulley in/out. If it moves any perceptable amount, you have crankwalk.

Im going to take it apart tomorrow and get some updates with some pictures of the carnage this time around! Hoping there isn't any crank walk and it was just a fluke since we did technically install another used flexplate.

Replaced it appeared the plastic plug fell in and jammed the flexplate.

You're kidding. That must be some cheap ass metal then. It can hold up to 200+ ft*lbs of torque but not a plastic plug.

Well if you look at the back of the flexplate there are obvious signs something was rubbing for a period of time and stopped at a point because it is dinged and I guess it caused it to warm the flexplate and probably driving it for a while like that caused it to break since it was spinning uneven probably for a while.
