SOHC 2.51 Timing belt.

Any one have any pics of the timing process on the sohc 2.5? finally got around to getting the timing belt and im pretty damn sure the rocket scientists at the auto store gave me the wrong part as usual. And i dont know if any one came across this little bit of info but lately iv noticed that at evry auto store, they pull up a DOHC 2.5 for the SOHC 2.5's. :smt017 and im thinkin maybe thats why im suspecting i got the wrong timing belt and it seems to not work evry which way i try to put it on.

yup mite as well close this. turns im missin some pulley wheels. and found it much easier to google a question and then it points to the thread on here.

Welp...got the timing belt set, however, the white marks on the belt dont quite line up with the marks on the cam gears. and also i found that the tensioner doesnt give a solid tension. does this mean its bad? When i push on the belt and at the same time i can see the piston on the tensioner moving in and out.

The marks may not line up 100% with non-oem belts (I had that experience with my EJ25D belt) but they should be damn close. Also in your picture you are missing a sprocket that goes below the tensioner.

Did you check to see if any of your pulleys and sprockets were noisy when spinning? Also, gripping the middle part of them do any "wiggle" in and out, even slightly?

The tensioner may/may not be fine. If you have any doubts I recommend you get a new one (along with new pulleys and sprockets as needed) because if any of those let go, your valves and pistons could become real close friends.

well I found the sprocket in my parts bin. It spins and sounds like a skate board wheel. All the other wheels are good and tight and don't spin so freely, They're like new. I have two tensioners but both have oil on top. Not too sure where it came from but I'm not trusting either of the two. I recall a while back on a 2.2 helping a friend do the belt, once the tensioner was released and pried down it didn't spring back like I explained above. But say those marks are off about a tooth on the cam gears, What exactly could happen? Damage, poor idle, or maybe even do some good? ..and thanks for the feed back.

^that's a correctly setup ej25 sohc belt.

Once you do yours a couple of times you'll appreciate how simple they are compared to DOHC.

Any sprockets or pulleys that make noise and/or wiggle in and out should be replaced - the bearings are shot.

When you said your belt was off by a tooth, was that with the belt routed like in the picture I linked? Cuz with a missing sprocket there's no way the tensioner will be able to make up for that slack.

If your belt is really off by a tooth, the car might still run, but the timing will be retarded by quite a bit (15*?). Off by too much and the ecu will not be able to get consensus from the crank and cam sensors and shouldn't let the engine fire up. You run the possibility of valve to piston contact when the starter motor is spinning the crank, though.

i think i may have a problem. :smt013 .. and this is why i swore i would never do my own timing belt. i was told as long as i line those white marks up with the notches on the pulleys id be fine, welllll i had the the crank mark at about 9:30 and spun the rite cam just about a complete turn. and yes i did feel alot of resistance. it sprung back into ease. so idk if i bent valves or not but i guess ill find out when i go to crank it over.

The driver side is "spring loaded," so as long as the crank was lined up at the marks, you didn't do any damage.
