Been lurking for a month or so, bought this 97 Outback at a rummage sale for $400 a month or so ago with what the owner described as the brakes being shot and would need new calipers, pads rotors. Hmm I looked the front rotors over and saw no wear and the engine sounded good so had to buy it.
Ok the good.....
Brakes....the back drivers side had just the hint of the pads backing plate and the piston was all the way out of the caliper so the fluid had leaked out. Easy fix, kit and fluid good to go.
Battery....less than 6 month old
Tires.....almost new Weather Handlers
Exterior.....paint good no weathering or clearcoat peeling
Interior.....pretty good need a bit of cleaning tho
Drive train....seems good but only drove maybe 80 miles nothing unusual, actually drove damn good
Coil pack and plug wires a few months old, have receipts for work recently done.
Yeah I really like this car and have wanted one for years so couldn't pass it up.

That's it, not to bad for the money, I've been doing my homework and getting a swap started today. I looked for an engine and read as much as I could find since I've never really done much work on a Subaru. I decided on a swap instead of a rebuild since I had no history of this engine and it kept wanting to over heat when I drove it.
I decided on the EJ22 as the replacement, for me it seems like and easier engine to work on, maybe a little better MPG and a lot cheaper than a rebuild. AND I found one close that I bought complete with alternator, AC compressor, power steering pump, starter, and even the exhaust manifold since it's a 97 and single port exhaust. Got it all for $400 out of a wrecked OB that had recently had $600 worth of work done on it, belts & tensioner type work. I should have everything else I need so I figure with gas to pick up new engine and normal fluid changes I'll have less than $900 in it.
One good point about the swap I plan on driving it tomorrow, one day to pull and one day to put in the new one.
I will be going thru the 2.5 and maybe a rebuild on it in my spare time if it's rebuildable. If not I've got some parts to sell....LOL
