View Full Version : brake upgrade for the 93

this is what i'm thinking of doing brake wise for my 93 legacy...
Perrin 4-piston calipers (front)
Wilwood 2-piston calipers (rear)
DBA slotted rotors (front and rear)
steel braided brake lines

now, i'm pretty sure i have this figured out, but i just want some opinions/advice from you guys in case i'm either a. headed in the wrong direction, b. could do something better or c. it won't work at all
i'm wondering with this setup will my 14s still be useable as winter rims?
i've also heard some bad things about dba cross-drilled rotors cracking, but never anything about the slotted...am i going to have a problem with these or should i just go with power-slot rotors?

Well, from what I just saw, Perrin no longer sells brakes? Just looked them up.

RacingBrake sells a front 4 pot that works with the follwing Subaru rims:
16x6.5 Legacy GT
16x6.5 WRX

and wheels listed below:

Subaru 4pot brakes fit under:
98-01 Impreza RS
2005 Legacy 2.5GT (turbo 5 spoke)

Don't know that much about Wilwood...but it seems they are pretty good due to their broad application base. but it looks (from their vehicle application guide) that the only brake kit for the Subarus are the 6pot front brake.

Honestly, get the 05 Legacy GT rear vented disc brake setup (I have this and love it; and it fits under the 1st list of rims above) and go with the RacingBrake 4 pot system for the front, since it fits under the same list too.

I'm going to have the same rears, but already have the Subaru FHI (non-Brembo) front 4pots awaiting installation.

You could go Subaru (FHI) rear 2pot, but that requires the backing plate to get removed and replaced with a supplied one. It also means you can only use rims that fit from the 2nd list.

Assuming you have rear discs, everything SHOULD bolt right on. If you have drums, you'll have to acquire rear disc hubs from an RS, Forester, 97-04 Legacy GT, etc.....then it'll be bolt on.

Personally, I'd swap in OEM WRX fronts (pick them up fairly cheap on NASIOC and require 16" wheels) with 91-94 Legacy turbo, vented rears. These will be a little harder to come buy but will probably be much cheaper then the '05 GT rears (and are the same size IIRC). This is the most bang for the buck and is a very well balanced system. Then throw some nice Axxis pads on it and it'll be sweet.

Unless you are going to go FI with a motor swap, I think the above system will more then handle whatever you might throw at it.

Just my .02

thanks for the help guys :)

gator - i'll have to look into the perrin calipers again then...i just put that list together a couple of weeks ago, so i assumed nothing had changed. and wilwood is like perrin...i think they're the same company, just different names....anyway, you definately gave me a lot more to think about, thanks :-D

matt - i was orignally thinking of doing the wrx swap :? my b/f thought just upgraded rotors would work better because the rex ones aren't slotted or anything, just bigger and i'd probably have to change other brake components because of the larger diameter...i was also looking to keep my 14s as the winter rims, but i guess no matter which way i go i'm going to be looking at getting 16s.
not going for a motor swap, btw, but i do have a complete 2.2L in my barn that i might consider tearing down and rebuilding with some beefy internals and then throwing that in  we'll see...i'm still really trying to figure out how far i want to go with the modding.

thanks again for the advice guys :-D

Just get the front calipers from a rex and then buy slotted rotors that are for the rex to put in. ;)

Oh, and slotted is much better then cross drilled but either way you go if you really want to extend the life of your rotor you should have them cryo treated. They last about 6 times longer that way and won't warp.

i knew slotted were better than cross-drilled...i was just wondering if anyone else had problems with dba slotted because i know the cross-drilled dba's crack a lot.
cryo-treatment...that's to help with longevity right? keeps stuff from corrosion? please excuse my ignorance...

rotor sizes (in question) are as follows:

290mmx18mm - 05 Legacy GT vented single pot rear setup
266mmx18mm - BC/BF (1st gen Leg TURBO; 90-94) vented single pot rear setup

The 05 Legacy GT rear setup has only been seen in the JDM GT-B/B4 (BE/BH; 3rd gen Legacy; 00-04) prior to being on the 05 Legacy GT (BL/BP; 4th gen Legacy; 05-?) turbo.

Don't get me wrong, vented rotors are better than solids...so either legacy turbo will be an upgrade....but more swept vented disc space is better still.

Hope this helps,
GGT

PS check my website, in my signature, to see the stock BD/BG/BK 2nd gen Legacy stock rotors vs the 05 Legacy turbo rear setup (page 2). You can also see the Subaru 4pots on page 4.

thanks for the help again you guys :-)

i'm definately going to have to mull all this information over and come up with a new plan then. y'all gave me a lot to work off of...thank you so much...i'll post the new ideas later on
