Salvaged 2.2 Trans. Questions/Advice?

I have a bad synchro that is only getting worse. Getting it fixed is gonna cost me a few hundred plus labor which'll be another few hundred.
Thinking about picking up a salvaged tranny. I understand that this is a shot in the dark but Im trying to save money.
Few questions. Will any 2.2 transmission go in, or does it have to be from a legacy. Also, how much should I look at spending for a used one, and is it doable for someone with a basic lift setup and tools?

Subaru transmissions are 100% interchangeable; they all bolt up just fine.

Just make sure it has the same final drive ratio. I think all 5MTs mated to 2.2L engines use the same FD, but a Subaru guru should probably confirm that.

Just realize that worn synchros is VERY common in Subarus so that salvaged tranny is likely to be in just as bad, if not worse, shape as your current one. Definitely save up for a rebuild if you want to fix it.

Word. Wrecking yard quoted me $750 installed. Told me I know it will be good because the car was driving when it was hit. I told him that my car was driving and I wouldnt consider my tranny to be 'good.'

I think the rebuild might end up being cheaper also. Will it be just the 2nd gear sync? What about bushings or anything else... I think the gear is fine.

You would want to plan on replacing all the bearings, synchros, seals, some springs, etc... a trans rebuilder will know what to get. Gears should be fine as long as the trans doesn't whine.

Getting any used part is a gamble. Some are junk, some are fine, and you won't necessarily know for sure until its installed and you are driving. I pulled my 5mt from an Impreza with almost 200k on the clock, and it doesn't grind at all in any gear at any temp. Actually, it shifts better than my brand new Mazdaspeed3 6MT did lol.

I cant just replace the one 2nd gear synchro thats acting up?

The yard did say they'd give me a 90 day warranty..

Of course you could replace just the 1 synchro, but it would still require complete disassembly of the trans, so you might as well do it right.
